Humboldt Neighborhood

Safe Commission

Sep 18, 2007

The Humboldt Neighborhood Association has signed on to an ongoing collaborative effort aimed at improving the safety and livability of our neighborhood. The Albina-Killingsworth Safe Neighborhood Commission ?— a collaboration between Portland Community College, Jefferson High School, the Portland Police Bureau, TriMet, the North Portland branch of the Multnomah County Library, area businesses, and other local groups, including the Neighborhood Association ?— began meeting in December 2006 to address the problem of criminal activity in the area surrounding the intersection of the two streets that give the Commission its name.

The group meets monthly at PCC Cascade Campus, and works on common goals that require the neighbors in our area to work closely together. Its overarching goal, in addition to reducing crime in the community, is to make the area a better and safer place to live, work, and study.

?“I?’m very encouraged by the enthusiasm with which the community has responded to this initiative,?” said Cascade Campus President Algie Gatewood. ?“It makes sense, because we are all neighbors, to come together and address these issues together.?”

The Commission hopes its activities ?— including graffiti removal and the installation of surveillance cameras along North Killingsworth Street ?— will help cultivate a more welcoming atmosphere in the area.

The Commission?’s next meeting is at 9 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, in Room 209 of the Student Services Building on Cascade Campus.
