In 2005, the Housing Authority of Portland was awarded a federal HOPE VI grant. This grant is anchoring a major revitalization project in the Humboldt neighborhood. The grant is financing the construction of Humboldt Gardens, which is replacing the former Iris Court cluster of apartments. Community meetings were conducted in the planning phase and interested residents were able to contribute ideas to the project. When completed, Humboldt Gardens will include apartments, a pocket park, and a mixed use building that will have space for a neighborhood center with computer and internet access, Head Start, and a community policing contact office. Infrastructure construction (roads, sidewalks, etc) has begun and all construction is to be completed by December, 2008. For more information, go to http://www.hapdx.org/humboldtgardens/index.html.
