Hausman Road Improvements Reply from City

Oct 30, 2007

Mr. Warren-

Below I have provided responses to the issues you mentioned in your October 24th e-mail. I regret that there is not better news to report, but work of that scale is primarily dependent on bond funding.

1. The work you describe on Babcock road was a 1994 City bond project. It was called the Babcock Rd./Leon Creek Improvement project that reconstructed Babcock from Hausman to Nickle and from DeZavala to a point west of Spring Rain. The project included new bridges and sidewalks. The project was planned and approved based on bond funding available and is what the voters of San Antonio approved. The project took three years to construct.

2. Unfortunately, there are no funded future road construction improvements in the area planned by the City. As you know, City voters recently approved the 2007-12 Bond program. The City Council appointed 128 residents from across San Antonio to serve on four Community Bond Committees with the charge of recommending to City Council $550 million in projects. The City Council endorsed 93% of the Community Bond Committees?’ recommendations on January 31, 2007. One project, Hausman Reconstruction: IH 10 West to Loop 1604 West project was presented to the Streets Committee as a prioritized list by City Staff, although it was not part of the Recommended list. The project was not selected by the Committee or City Council for the Bond Election. Information from the Committee meetings can be viewed at http://www.sanantonio.gov/2007Bond/streetscommittee.asp.

Although not a road improvement project, a project is underway that will add a left turn lane on the southbound lane of Babcock at the intersection of Babcock and Hausman.

3. The positioning of ramp locations along the access roads are decisions made by TxDOT. We will pass your suggestion for the Bandera exit ramp to them.

(1) Why did the city stop Babcock road short of loop 1604 at Hausman Road? This is a major road that is met by three single feeder roads. I can not even get out of my housing street that is located in Hunter Chase.

(2) When is Hausman Road going to be improved. The new high school, library, UTSA expansion, Valaro Headquarters Expansion , UTSA Sports Complex, Northside ISD Sports Complex, Northside bus barn, FBI Regional Headquarters and La Catra Mall traffic.

(3) When I lived in Beaumont Tx, the highway department switched the on ramp locations of the off ramp locations given more distance from the traffic lights at the exits where the traffic would not back up on to the highway. They even received donations from buisnesses and land owners because it gave better access to more properties along the access road. Example Bandara road would not be backing up on to loop 1604 if the exit was back at the present location of the on ramp at Hausman Road.
