Hunters Mill Homeowners Association

Safety Committee

Oct 04, 2002

At the Hunters Mill Homeowner Association?’s Annual Meeting, the Safety Committee presented a report on the year?’s safety projects (this report was published in the August newsletter) and asked residents for suggestions for projects to consider this year. One homeowner suggested that the committee explore the Cellular on Patrol program and determine if it is feasible to implement in our subdivision. Cellular on Patrol (COP) is explained on the San Antonio Police Department website: http://www.sanantonio.gov/sapd/cop.asp.

Here is an excerpt about the program:

?“The San Antonio Police Department offers residents the opportunity to participate in a special community involvement program named CELLULAR ON PATROL. The purpose of the COP Program is to prepare residents to be the ?‘eyes and ears?’ of the police and to promote closer cooperation between residents and city agencies that exist to serve them.
Since its beginnings in 1993, the COP Program has trained more than 4,600 San Antonio residents in how to work together with their neighbors, with police and with other city agencies to prevent crime and decrease the fear of crime in their neighborhoods.?”
Volunteers who are interested in COP would attend a training program, presented at a SAPD substation, consisting of eight hours of classroom training and the opportunity for up to eight hours of ride-along with a district patrol officer.
Several street safety projects remain a priority for the committee, including working with the city to add speed humps, dead end signs on cul-de-sacs and possible speed reductions in our neighborhood.
The Safety Committee works in tandem with the Civic Affairs Committee, and we plan to continue neighborhood clean up and graffiti paint-out projects. The times and dates for these clean ups will be published in future newsletters.
As always, these programs are dependent on the strength of many volunteers. We need more committee members to successfully complete these safety projects. Please call Sandy Ward if you are interested in joining the Safety Committee.
