Follow Up

Good idea to redirect everyone to this site to continue our discussions, Rhonda. My original intention was to send out my initial e-mail only, but I now believe that a follow up is in order. First, though, I want to say that I sent out my original e-mail for the following reasons:
1. To try to get others invloved in the discussion.
2. To make people aware that there are alternatives to some of the proposed changes.
3. To spark others into contributing their ideas.
Also, I wanted to get the issues out in the open via an e-mail because:
A. I'm sure that not everyone on the e-mail distribution lists will be able to attend the upcoming meeting.
B. Even if only half of them attend, it seems it would be difficult to have everyone's ear when expressing ideas, concerns, opinions, etc.
C. Not everyone is comfortable speaking to a group of people.
D. As I suspect is true for others, I am able to express myself more clearly by taking time to crystallize my thoughts and typing them rather than by speaking extemporaneously.
Also, I'd like to say that any changes to our neighborhood affect all of us who live here - not just the few outspoken individuals. Therefore, I believe that all concerns raised by members of our community regarding proposed changes should be heard, considered, and included as part of the dialogue (yes, even the ''nuisance'' factor).
Regarding the intersection of Broadway and Riverview, I think that Kelly had a wonderful idea in placing a sign before the intersection stating ALL TRAFFIC MUST TURN RIGHT. In addition, I think it would be great to have a center line painted on Riverview starting well before the intersection, that curves right onto Broadway for a distance of a house or two. This would inform people from both Riverview (heading east) and Broadway that there is only one direction they can go. Also, I'd like to see a couple of those large curved arrows pointing to the right painted on the street before the turn (from Riverview). I think all these things would be of great benefit to those unfamiliar with the intersection, and have a much greater impact than a STOP sign.
Thanks for reading. Perhaps more later.

slow 'em down

When we lived at 6529 Riverview we emplored IPD to put a speed trap at the corner of Bway and Riverview- thinking that they would gain enough revenue to pave our steets in gold... We called the Mayor's office and asked for STOP signs, but instead they reinstalled the DO NOT ENTER sign that had been previously knocked down.
IPD had increased patrols for a while after Andrea's house had been burgled TWICE, but that didn't last long.
I believe that collectively we can incite change and make our streets safer! Somebody's got this area's number, and they are telling other bad people- We need to deter this crime by staying informed and alert.
Glad to be neighbors in our community,
Debbie Toplis
P.S. special thanks to Jill for keeping us informed, and to Rhonda for uniting us!!

TO COLLEGE AVE. Sign Alternative

In order to address Kim's concerns, I believe I've come up with a better and less intrusive variation to my original suggestion of the TO COLLEGE AVE. sign.

I recently revisited that intersection (Riverview Dr., Washington Blvd., and 64th St.), and it looks as though it would be possible to place two smaller (regular-sized) directional signs on two already existing posts. They would both be facing West on each side of where 64th St. begins at that intersection (on the East side of Riverview, and on both the North and South sides of 64th St.). One could be placed on the back of the STOP sign that is currently there (which is facing East on 64th St.), and the other one on the West side of the telephone pole that's located on the South side of 64th St. Both could again say TO COLLEGE AVE. with an arrow pointing up (meaning forward). I think this would help cut down on the ''lost'' traffic that ends up at Riverview and Broadway without having to erect new posts in that area for signs.

Regards to all who read this,
Dan
