West Des Moines – The city of West Des Moines reported a wastewater release after a contractor hit a sanitary sewer line while working near Eighth Street and Office Park Road south of the freeway.
Debris backed up in the pipe, causing wastewater to overflow and run out a manhhole. The release was discovered about 9 a.m. Thursday and ended by 11 a.m. after the obstruction was removed.
An estimated five to 10 gallons per minute of untreated wastewater travelled about 20 feet from the construction site into a storm sewer that flows to Walnut Creek. Walnut Creek flows into the Raccoon River.
The DNR checked the site Thursday afternoon and will be following up with the city.
