Interlaken Neighborhood Association Newsletter


Welcome to the second edition of the INA Newsletter. The INA board of directors and the various committee chairpersons have been busy this Fall working to organize the association into a formal entity. Local attorney Kerry Wilson has prepared documents and sent them to Tallahassee for association incorporation. More details available elsewhere in this newsletter.

Several options for the Interlaken logo have been submitted by Chris Nikdel and are currently being revised. We thank Chris for her work and look forward to having the logo adorn our newsletter and all official correspondence of the association.





INA Vice-President awarded Banker?’s Cup

INA VP Jane West, of Lake Howard Drive, is the 2004 Banker?’s Cup Woman of the Year. The Banker?’s Cup was established in 1923 and honors a local man and woman who have made significant contributions to the community through years of public service or a single noteworthy project. Among Jane?’s many community activities are the Winter Haven Garden Club, Habitat for Humanity, the city?’s Tree Board, Special Olympics, and the visioning group Our Future By Design. Jane is married to Nat, last year?’s recipient of the Banker?’s Cup. We salute you both.



Interlaken resident inducted into Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame

David P. Lyons, of Lake Mirror Drive, was inducted into the Tampa Bay Business Hall of Fame on February 26th of this year. The event is held to recognize individuals who have significantly contributed to the Tampa area through business leadership, community involvement and commitment to education. Mr. Lyons is the founder and chairman of Saddle Creek Corporation, a Lakeland based company specializing in warehousing and transportation. He and his wife of 49 years, Connie, are long-time residents of Interlaken. Among many civic associations Mr. Lyons is a past president of Kiwanis and has held several posts with that organization. He is a member of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce and active in his church, Beymer Memorial United Methodist. We salute you Mr. Lyons

Fall Fest: the Interlaken Fall Fest was held on November 1 at Interlaken Park and was very well attended. Thanks to Liz Craig and all members of the social committee who worked hard to organize this wonderful event. The food and music were great; there were rides and games for the kids and good, old-fashioned neighborly camaraderie. We look forward to this coming year?’s event.


INA Resident Directory: the association neighborhood directory is now available. Please submit additions and corrections to Jane West (west9@earthlink.net).

Committee changes: Rolf Jaehnigen resigned as chairperson of the Crime Watch/Traffic committee and Carl Cheatham has accepted this position. Jack Watkins has accepted the position of Treasurer pending membership approval.

Historical Lighting: it has been suggested at a board meeting that a form of distinctive lighting for the neighborhood be considered at the general meeting.

Neighborhood Grants: Cyndi Threlkeld and Jane West have been looking into neighborhood grant money availability and have several good leads. They will be attending a meeting later this month in Bartow.

Incorporation: It has been determined that the Interlaken Neighborhood Association needs to incorporate in order to formalize the status of the association. This has recently been accomplished. There is now a need to establish by-laws as well as a bank account. The physical address for the association is Beymer United Methodist Church.

Welcome packets: The ever-active social committee has assembled neighborhood welcome packets to be given to new residents. These packets consist of a City of Winter Haven Leisure Services Guide, a welcoming letter from the mayor of WH, an INA Directory, an INA Newsletter and various other items of interest.

Easter Parade and Egg Hunt: this year?’s Easter Parade and Egg Hunt will be held on Saturday, April 10 at 3:30 P.M. The parade will begin at the Craig?’s home (1220 Lake Howard Terrace) and proceed to Triangle Park where the egg hunt will be held. Details to follow.

Traffic: there has been a speed hump installed on Howard Terrace and some rumble strips added on 17th Street at Ave. L. There are other traffic slowing methods being considered including a roundabout type structure on Howard Terrace at Mirror Terrace and a 3-way stop on 8th Street at Howard Terrace.

YMCA: a survey is being taken to assess community interest in the establishment of a YMCA locally.

Membership Dues: it has been determined that membership dues are necessary for the successful operation of our neighborhood association. Dues are to be $20.00 per year per household, and are to be due in March. Though voluntary, the Association Board of Directors hopes everyone will understand the need to have operating capital and choose to participate. Please remit to:

Community Activity: Jane West is offering an Arts and Crafts session, a ?“papermaking workshop?”, at her home at 9:00 A.M. on April 2. You may contact her for details.

Chamber of Commerce: The Chamber of Commerce is looking for volunteers to beautify the canals & bridges in WH. You may contact them at 293-2138 for more information.

Polk Vision: Polk Vision is meeting at PCC on March 18th at 7:00 P.M. (TONIGHT) All interested parties are urged to attend.

ALL ITEMS MUST BE CURBSIDE BY 7:00 A.M. ON THE COLLECTION DAY:

This service is provided to residents of the City of Winter Haven, whereby,
they may clean out their old junk items at no additional charge. All
commercial trash and junk will be subject to normal charges.

THIS PROGRAM IS FOR JUNK ITEMS ONLY: (OLD FURNITURE, APPLIANCES,
METAL, WOOD, ETC.) JUNK DOES NOT INCLUDE HORTICULTURE ITEMS,
(BRUSH, LEAVES, GRASS CLIPPINGS, SHRUBBERY, TREE LIMBS, TRUNKS, ETC.)

Junk and horticulture must be separated into two piles; the junk in one pile
and the horticulture in another. Should you have tires they must be in a
third pile and not to exceed four tires.

IF THESE ITEMS (JUNK, HORTICULTURE AND TIRES) ARE MIXED, THERE WILL BE NO
PICK UP.

During Spring Clean-Up, there will be NO SCHEDULED HORTICULTURE COLLECTION;
from April 12TH, through April 23RD, trash service will resume at the end
of the clean up on Monday, April 26TH, 2004. Spring Clean-Up 2004 will
include all City of Winter Haven residential garbage customers only. If
you have any questions, please call the Solid Waste Division at 291-5756.
