A neighbor down the street from me has the loudest SUV/van I have ever heard (my mother visiting over the holidays thought the boiler was about to explode - and her bedroom is on the back of the house). This neighbor will leave the SUV/van idling for 10-15 minutes whenever s/he starts it or shuts it off. S/he leaves around 6:30am for work and goes out late at night. The noise wakes me up (I've tried earplugs - it doesn't work) and makes my dog freak out. Also, the length of idling bothers me especially when shutting off the car since it you don't need to warm up a car to shut it off. It's illegal to allow a car to idle for more than 10 minutes in Colorado, but I don't know about the noise (which is the biggest problem). What is the CWCA's stand on noise? What should I do?

What can be done.
First off, have you talked to the owner? I know this may not be what you want to hear, however, it's may be that your neighbor does not realize that are causing you a problem. You are right it is against the law to leave a vehicle running unattended (called huffing) and there may be a noise violation as well. The Jefferson County Sheriff's contact for the neighborhood is Deputy K. Collyer (720) 377-2001. We have had very good results working thru the Sheriff's Office in the past. Please feel free to attend or next CWCA meeting on Tuesday, March 21th at 7 P.M. at Dutch Creek Elementary School and we can see if any of the other board members can come up with other options. |
