Nepotism?

Posted in: Woodlawn Park
Could someone address the fact that we have two spouses serving in city official capacities? It doesn't seem logical that we would have two members of the same household serving in this way. How does that co-exist with the city's nepotism/employment of family members by city officials clause of our Code of Ethics?

Every city, regardless of size must have a Code of Ethics addressing such matters on file. It is a matter of law. Since I'm sure we have one, I'd like to know what it says regarding this issue: nepotism/the employment of family members. If we defer to Louisville Metro's, it quite clearly addresses this issue and can be found on the city's website. Such measures are put in place for obvious reasons.

I'm curious to see how this is happening.
No nepotism here

I happen to work for Louisville Metro and I can tell you that spouses, brothers, wives, cousins all work in Metro Government. The key to nepotism is having one relative in charge of another where they might use their power to help the other employee or otherwise give preferential treatment. Since both of our council members report to the mayor and to the residents of Woodlawn Park, no ethical violation exists. Plain and simple, they don't report to each other. Now, if one is in charge of a committee and the other serves on the same committee, that MAY be a conflict, as of yet I have not seen that as an issue. Plus, when you only have 6 people run for council and 6 vacancies, well, you get the idea.
Not sure If I agree

I appreciate what you're saying intrinsically. However, the Louisville Metro Ethics Ordinance (OS-32-2-03)states that ''No Metro Officer shall exercise direct management or supervisory authority over any member of his/her immediate family.'' Now the question is whether or not they are answerable to each other. I believe that they, in fact are. When the Code Enforcement Board has city issues, to whom do they go? The Mayor and City Council. It gets conflicatatory at that point. You can appreciate how I'm sure. I'd like to see what our Ethics Code says about these types of issues.

city council spots

My family and I have been residents here for almost four years, but I don't know much about our city government. I'd like to get more involved in our city and you mentioned city council vacancies. Are there still vacancies? If so, how can I get information on running for a seat. Thanks very much.
