Is Floyd Street Ready?

With the recent closing and relocation announcements by New World Foods and Allgood Foods combined with the opening of a new resturant/bar on South Floyd, the question must be asked: What is about to happen on South Floyd Street directly across and down the street from PapaJohns Cardinal Stadium?

U of L is looking for places to expand:
New Football practice field, New Baseball field, On Campus Basketball Arena. Are we, as a business area, ready to assimilate the new businesses or uses for these prime locations.

The additional questions include: What other industries are preparing for a relocation in the area? What types of business would be attracted to the area? How can we prepare for the best use of these buildings, parcels of land, and the future of business in the South Central area?

Whether we like it or not, we are at a crossroads. The former American AirFilter property to the west and the soon to be available properties to the east of PJCS make for interesting conversation and watchfulness. We must also prepare for action as these areas transition.

yes!

You are completely right Duane, change is coming, I personally see U of L taking Algood, since it makes a perfect link with the main campus and Papa John's. I don't know what else they need that could be accomadated on these parcels, considering they have various kinds of industry on them and that dictates land use. I am certain they are way ahesd of us in their evaluation.

I. myself , would like to see a basketball arena , if it is built, regardless of NBA, in this area and have it contingent to U of L's campus.
This would give them a sports complex superiority that would be the envy of most Universities as well as a most marketable complex for other uses.

I do not want to see a number of cheap hotel rooms go up. That makes for trouble farther down the road. The Business Office was talking about an office complex but that would depend on how much the University needs and how much they are in the position to absorb now.

We know they are in need of land for student housing and the one spot that would accomodate that is the land on Third where Air Filter took down houses for a parking lot. The parking would have to be accomodated somewhere else.

The one thing I don't want to see is the destruction of more housing. I personally do not like the land clearing the track is doing on Third. I would like to have some concrete info on what they plan to do with that land. I also would like to know when the City is going to kind of insist that they get busy with a parking building. Lot to think about. All of this will give rise to satelitte development that may or not be good. The last I heard, the city was doing a comprehensive plan and I personally believe it should generate an overlay so that the new does not overwhelm the old.
