Recycling in Lakewood Heights

Just about anything can be recycled now. Here are some tips:

Use the Tietze Park igloos for aluminum cans and glass bottles and jars. The money that is recovered from these goes directly to the neighborhood association, and is our largest single source of the funds that keep us going. REMEMBER: CANS & BOTTLES OUTSIDE THE IGLOOS IS NOT RECYCLING! THEY ARE THROWN IN THE TRASH BY THE SANITATION DEPT.

Mixed paper of all types can be taken to nearby dropoff bins at First Community Church, 6255 E. Mockingbird (South side of Mockingbird at Norris).

In the fall, the neighborhood is covered with leaves. Composting them is easy, and leaf compost is great plant food and mulch. Just put them in a pile and turn it over with a pitchfork every month or two. Sprinkle a little dirt on top to get things going and make the top concave (dished) to catch rain. Every few months, sift out good compost through half-inch hardware cloth, and the pile won't really get bigger as you add more leaves. Use boards or cinder blocks to contain it enough so it doesn't blow around, with gaps to let air in through the side. If you want, work in grass clippings, and table scraps too (but then you have to work a little harder to keep down bugs and odors). You can buy an expensive bin, and worry about the right “mix”, and the proper temperature, but leaves will compost on their own if you just pile ‘em up.

New Recycling Containers Have a New Schedule

Sanitation Services has expanded its recycling program to include Big Blue roll-carts. Dallas residents have the option of registering to receive a Big Blue roll-cart or continue using the plastic bag method.

Delivery of the Big Blue roll-cart will begin November and December 2006. Please continue using the plastic bag method and follow your regular recycling collection schedule until January 2, 2007.

If you prefer, you may continue recycling with blue bags (or clear bags) and need not register for a blue recycle cart. However, starting January 2, 2007, we will begin the twice-monthly pickup of recyclables in carts and/or bags.
