How to get involved to prevent crime

Neighborhood Watch


What is it?
Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of residents in cooperation with local law enforcement to reduce crime in their communities.

It involves:

* Neighbors getting to know each other and working together in a program of mutual assistance.

* Residents trained to recognize and report suspicious activites in thier neighborhoods.

* Implementation of crime prevention techniques such as home security, Operation Identification, etc.

How do you get a Neighborhood Watch started?
* Meet with your neighbors and decide which ones are interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch group.

* Pick a coordinator for your group. This person will act as the group coordinator.

* Make a map of your neighborhood indicating which addressses are particiatingin the program. Submit this map to the Sheriff's Neighborhood Watch Coordinator.

* Have regular meetings with your neighbors to get acquainted and discuss
neighborhood issues.

Educational neighborhood watch meetings are held every other month. Topics of discussion may cover; Vehicle safety/security, Personal safety, Child safety, Deadly Force/Citizens Arrest, Home/Vacation security, Gang/Drug awareness, Holiday safety and other topics of interest.

During these meeetings there will be an opportunity to discuss the problems in your neighborhood and answer any questions you might have.

Basic Neighborhood Watch Coordinator meetings give you an introduction to neighborhood watch. Information on how to join, how to use our map, how to call the Sheriff's Department, and how to purchase and install Neighborhood Watch signs.
