Neighborhood Needs

Can you add more? Can you help move us toward these goals?

-Lights for soccer fields, good playground equipment & ramada upgrades at James Thomas Park.

-speed humps, traffic circles, neighborhood entry signs, covered bus stops.

-reforestation of the Retention Basin area where the County razed the vegetation behind the neighborhood. This will beautify the blight that was created and curb erosion and dust storms.

-clean businesses in neighborhood, training opportunities for good paying jobs, youth mentoring
and apprentice programs.

-a wall between 36th St and the houses that lie between Cochise Vista and Pinal Vista.

-protection of the riparian wildlife area between Campbell and Kino and south of 36th St.

-new businesses to serve the community.

-end of forced bussing of neighborhood children. Make
cross town bussing a choice, not an obligation.

About our association

History of the Association

Las Vistas Neighborhood Association (previously known as Western Hills 1), was first formed in 1989 after a split from its prior union with the neighboring Western Hills 2 Neighborhood.

We immediately began the process of petitioning the community to put in street lights in what was a very high crime neighborhood. The street lights were approved and we became the largest petition district up to that date in the City of Tucson, with overwhelming homeowner support for paying for the street light installation.

In 1993, the boundaries of the association were expanded to include the Parkside area (another adjacent neighborhood), and all the lands south of Western Hills 1 to Ajo Rd. At that time, we renamed the association "Las Vistas"

The association has worked on many projects over the years, including helping the police to cut crime, beautification of James Thomas Park, encouraging local soccer leagues, working on street safety issues (including installation of a crosswalk streetlight in front of the Boy's and Girl's Club), and bringing City services to those in need in the area.

Our boundaries were once again expanded in October, 2004 to include a large industrial area to the East of our neighborhood. We welcome those businesses on board and hope to have a mutually beneficial relationship with our newest members.

We also publish a monthly neighborhood newsletter which is delivered to over 1000 neighborhood homes.

Current Activities

The Las Vistas Association is currently administering the use of $400,000.00 of Back to Basics grant funding.
We are currently in the process of acquiring speed humps, neighborhood entry signs, park lighting and bus shelters with the grants.

We are also currently involved in resolving problems with the incomplete County renovation of the flood control detention ponds located in the southern area of the neighborhood.

We are asking for input on decisions made on the development of the 300 acre property adjacent to our neighborhood which has recently been purchased by KB Homes, and are particularly interested in having input on the development of the riparian area abutting the Tucson Community School, which has been annexed by the South Park Neighborhood, although it geographically affects our neighborhood much more than theirs.

The association is currently concerned about the resurfacing of 36th St. in between Campbell and Country Club Roads and would like to see traffic mitigation measures taken to slow down circulation in on this four lane road that is abutted by neighborhood homes. The suggestion that the road be made into a two lane road with a turn lane and bike paths has been recieved with little enthusiasm by the Tucson Transportation Dept., but we will continue with efforts to convince them that there are huge safety issues with having this road be a 4 lane thoroughfare.
