A few weeks ago Ed & I discovered that we've been paying taxes for 2+ acres of land here in College Park Country Estates. I called the Maricopa County Assessor's Office to dispute their calculations, and was informed that we did indeed live on a piece of property a little over 2 acres in size. When I claimed that the Assessor's records were incorrect I was told that I could ask for a ''remeasure'' on our land, but that it was unlikely that an error had been made.
Confident that the Assessor's records were wrong, I pulled records on all of the parcels in our subdivision - low and behold, I discovered that everyone was being assessed for 2+ acres of land - or more. In fact, one of our neighbors is being assessed for 5+ acres!
I visited the local Assessor's Office (Santa Fe Plaza at Gilbert & Southern) to inform them of the error, and in disbelief one of the employees pulled the parcel maps and recalculated the square footage of our property. ''You're right, there's been an error'' he said.
I then informed him that the entire neighborhood had been assessed incorrectly. His jaw dropped as he began to look at the measurements on parcels throughout the entire neighborhood.
So, to make a long story short, the Assessor's Office is recalculating the square footage of each parcel in our neighborhood, and will be making corrections to the amount of land for which each of us is being assessed. Unfortunately Arizona law prohibits us from receiving credit for more than the past three years, but each of us can probably expect some sort of credit - I'm certain to be applied to next year's taxes - as a result of the Assessor's error. But, at least it's something. Let me know if you'd like a copy of the Assessor's record of your parcel. You can email me at cyndigee@msn.com or call me at 926-6380.
