Update from a meeting w/Major Bennett on Tuesday...
Crime in Tampa is down 46% from this time last year - they've got a plan in place and will continue to utilize it since it appears to be working.
LOCK your windows, doors and vehicles - many thefts occur as an incident of opportunity. Someone walks by your unlocked vehicle and sees your ipod on the console, they can easily open your door and take it - however if your door was locked, they'd most likely move on in search of an easier target. In the morning reports we get every day.. many of the thefts were from unlocked front doors, unlocked vehicles, windows and so on.
The Major also mentioned that summer is fast approaching which means a bunch of bored kids roaming the streets. Bored kids can get in trouble! Make a mental note to look out your windows more often, spend some time in the yard etc - report anything suspicious, anything at all - they'd rather we call and it be nothing than receive a call when it's too late. If you have any dispatcher issues, ask to speak to their supervisor or the shift commander.
Graffiti - we discussed this on Tuesday, they feel they have pinpointed the offenders because once they started questioning, the graffiti had stopped... however it happened again last night in Forest Hills near the golf course. I'll keep you all updated as I find out more.
Mobile patrol - there are about half a dozen of us certified now, so you'll see us walking, biking, driving around keeping an eye out. The more we're seen, the more they'll know they're being seen!
