Jackie Tatum Harvard Recreation Center

On Saturday morning November 3, 2007 there was a beautiful rededication Pool Groundbreaking ceremony for a multi-million dollar state of the art pool and recreation center at the Harvard Park Recreation center at 1535 W. 62nd St., Los Angeles, CA.

It was renamed after the trailblazer Jackie Tatum. With 43yrs of service, she was the first African -American General Manager of the Department of Recreation and Parks. She started her career at the bottom as a Recreation Assistant and worked her way to the top! She was born in Kansas City, KA and received her BA in Physical Education from the University of Southern California. She was also named city employee of the year in 1992 and the recipient of the Susan B. Anthony Award, which recognizes outstanding business and professional women.

The Pool and bathhouse will be a 3675 square-foot, one-story concrete masonry building with two pools located within the existing Jackie Tatum / Harvard Recreation Center complex. The family aquatic center includes a 3,400 square -foot traditional swimming pool, a 2,600 square -foot activity pool with zero depth entry, play equipment and a water slide, a life guard station, first aid room, ADA accessible, restrooms, equipment, storage, mechanical and filter rooms, a 210 square-foot changing room, and outdoor basketball and volleyball courts.

This is a welcome and long overdue outstanding addition to our community and we welcome it?’s forthcoming completion. Yes there are great and positive changes happening within our community in South Los Angeles, and this is one them!
