Democrats to rally in Long Beach
By John Canalis, Staff Writer
LONG BEACH - Some of Long Beach's most powerful Democrats hope to do a little damage to John McCain's post-convention bounce - and help some of their own win Nov. 4 - by gathering for a rally at noon Saturday at Recreation Park, 4900 E. Seventh St.
The Barack Obama campaign plans to send representatives to enlist volunteers from the Long Beach area as well.
Rep. Laura Richardson, state Sen. Jenny Oropeza, Assemblywoman Betty Karnette, Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, Councilwoman Bonnie Lowenthal, Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook, and California Democratic Party Chairman Art Torres are expected at the ''Southern California Democrats United Unity Event and Barbecue,'' beneath the park band shell, said James Johnson, president of the Long Beach Democratic Club.
''Long Beach is proud to host this regional event, as we are a natural focal point for Los Angeles and Orange County Democratic clubs and organizations to meet,'' Johnson said. ''The candidacy of Barack Obama has inspired Democrats from all walks of life to organize for what promises to be a historic election.''
Obama should easily win Long Beach, where registered Democrats and independents outnumber Republicans.
Democrats are also attending to local matters at the Saturday event.

campaigns for office. Foster drafted the measure.
Long Beach Republicans, who oppose Measure I, are seeking support from the Los Angeles County Republican Party at a meeting tonight.
Participating organizations at the Long Beach event include the Bellflower, Hubert Humphrey, Long Beach Lambda, Orange County, Palos Verdes Peninsula and San Pedro Democratic clubs, as well as the Long Beach and Southeast L.A. Young Democrats and the Los Angeles County Democratic Party.
The rally is free, but those who would like to attend are asked to RSVP to longbeach
