In 1999, after a 4 year study sampling hundreds of home ivasion offenders, the percent of respondents rating the following factors as a deterrent are:
1) Belief that house is occupied (84%)
2) Belief of presence of an alarm (84%)
3) Presence of CCTV camera nearby (82%)
4) Apparent strength of doors/window locks (55%)
5) Evidence of membership of Neighborhood Watch or similar (29%)
6) Property marking campaigns (25%)
Other factors include convenient approach and exit routes and there being a ready market for the goods.
NOWHERE IN THE REPORT is the presence of lighting mentioned as a deterrent! Outdoor lights provide no information about the occupancy of a house, the biggest factor that influences a criminals' decision to break into a house.
However, leaving a light on indoors implies that a house is occupied, which is more off-putting to a potential intruder and at least 5 times more efficient han a streetlight(assuming an indoor 100W bulb as opposed to an outdoor 500W bulb).
