Signs and the law

Jan 27, 2002
I hate to start the new year on this but it was not left up to me. It is all over the primary page message board so I think it needs to be here. Where the idea came that it is all right to post signs on Southern Parkway is beyond me but apparently there are people who think that way. However you might think, you need to know it is illegal to post signs on a city right-of-way or a city park, both of which Southern Parkway is. When we first started working on bringing the Parkway back, signage was one of our first orders of business. There were signs posted everywhere and the Parkway looked like a dump. The law was explicit but nobody was doing anything, including the city agencies that were charged with enforcement. The paper ran an article on the problem with an attitude like- these people are at it again. It used to be the horses and now it's yardsale signs. Don't they have anything better to do with their time? Well, we showed them! We restored our linear park to a level not held by any other, to the point we are cited as a prime example of restoration of Olmsted's work on the level of New York and Boston. That is quite an achievement.
Now we have some uninformed and unknowledgable people leading us down the old path to iniquity again. The law says that the law stands and ignorance of the law is no excuse. Therefore if you have a GOOD CAUSE that you wish to advertise, please put the sign in your own front yard and not on Southern Parkway. It is an illegal act to place it on the public's property. We do not wish to become a dump again. Thank you.

Political signs

2002
For some reason, politicians think the law does not apply to them. Note huge political sign on Southern Parkway in the block below the Watterson on the west side. It is on the parkland. Considering this person is running for an office that involves enforcing the law, well I wonder what he thinks this says about his qualifications?
