Heywood Elementary

Posted in: S Louisville
I have read your statement about what South Louisvile is about and as a point of information, I would like to clarify one thing, The site of Heywood Elementary is not being built on. The building that was Heywood Elementary is being renovated according to National Register criteria. It is the most outstanding example of architecture of it's type in the City of Louisville and was placed on the National Register some years ago. It was thought that 9th & O would preserve it but they did not last very long at that location. When it was put up for auction, a concerted effort was begun by the Preservation Community to find a user who would be in a position to do the proper restoration to meet National Register Criteria. That use was found in the Horsemen's Benevolent Society. It will be used now by the same type of people who first gave it life, the workers. That is appropriate to the nth degree. Thanks to the same people who saved Male High School and Shelby
Park, Heywood Elementary is being restored to the useful life it had for many, many years. Thank you, Louisvile Historical League, City of Louisville's Landmarks Commission, Economic Development and all the truly dedicated people of the South end, who worked so determinedly to see it happen. A special thanks to all the people at Churchill Downs who supported this venture and worked so diligently to see it happen. The eyes of the world on this area and tis venture will prove that the Downs is serious about it's place in the Southend.
