I've submitted the following proposal in a grant application to Brightside requesting funds to purchase large period style urns to be permanently installed along our street -- we'll know by March 10th.
The West Saint Catherine Neighborhood Association members desire to reclaim their heritage by a gradual restoration of the West Saint Catherine Street streetscape to its former status as the ''jewel'' of the Limerick historic district. It's easy to see that a major reason for choosing to live in our area is the obvious charm and ambience of our beautiful Victorian homes that line our lovely street, but another reason people move into the area can be attributed to the strong sense of community we share and encourage. The homes and sense of community are our drawing cards, but when it comes to the streetscape, few authentic touches indicate that you are in a special historic district. By addressing the aesthetics of our streetscape, we are confident that we can help to curb littering, vagrancy, and even worse criminal activities. Studies have shown that people are less likely to litter when an area appears to be well tended. In an attempt to remedy this problem, we've come up with a proposal for the permanent installation of large period style urns on West Saint Catherine Street from Fourth through to Seventh Street. Our plan is to fill these urns with evergreens and flowers year round, but our hope is that with the addition of the urns, we'll not only have made a positive step in reclaiming our history, we?’ll have created a visual reminder to the world of the ''pride of ownership'' residents of Limerick* feel for its major thoroughfare.
