The point isn't to be a visible presence while we are all home and alert.
To have a small cities police chief, the point is to have a visible presence while we are all at school or work, or asleep. I think he does a nice job. I was outside at 1am a few weeks ago because my furnace was on the fritz and he was on patrol then.
If you want peace of mind we have a small city in the lowest crime Metro Police district in the entire city (division 5), and we live within the lowest crime beat within said district. So, we esentially live in the safest neighborhood in Metro, even more so than Lake Forest or the Polo Fields.
