Prevent Neighborhood Crime

Theft

We live in the very last house on the right hand side of Acapolca way. Our house got robbed several months back. I was at home on a Wed or Thur and left for a few hours. I remembered when I left that a bunch of construction workers we breaking for lunch next to our house. When I came back a few hours later, the back door had been busted in and they stole all of our jewelry, dvd's, playstaion, anything electronic that was small enough to quicky get out our door. I am not saying that it was the contruction workers by any means, BUT, I did call and informed the people head of the contruction site that our house was broken into and that workers are not suppose to be parking on the side street next to our house. I think we were just an easy target, but yet, it is still scary. We double lock all of our doors now!!!!

Block Watch and LMPD

Thank you for sharing this with us, and I am very sorry you were victimized! It's good that you are taking all precautions now. Do you live near the Block Watch sign by chance? Block Watch is another worthy activity for our Neighborhood Association, as there are many free tools and resources available to us to help us make our homes and thus our neighborhood more secure, and send a clear message to outsiders that this is a neighborhood to avoid. It is on our agenda for February, and I will extend an invitation to Officer Dukes, and ask him to bring materials with him, like the home security checklist I made available to all at the Sept. meeting. Check this website for other helpful crime prevention information.

Home Security Decals

Imagine you are a burglar with one thing on your mind: breaking into a home. Imagine you approach that home only to see a clearly visible security decal announcing that the home is protected by a continuously monitored security system. Would you think twice about trying to break in? You bet. Security decals are an inexpensive investment compared to the cost of more expensive home security monitoring systems, but remember that only a monitored security system will alert authorities in the event of a break-in. Not all burglars will be deterred by a sticker. The best solution is to invest in your peace of mind and the protection of your home and your family by installing a hardwired or wireless system; use home security decals to decrease the chances of that system ever being tested.

Visit the local building supply company, such as Home Depot or Lowe's, or go online to order. Here is a website that sells these window decals at a very reasonable price: http://www.homesecuritystore.com/ezStore123/DTProductZoom.asp?productID=1330 (Note: This is not an advertisement, just a tip.)
Chopper is loose

Probably 98% of homeowners here have not been burglarized, and no neighborhood has zero crime ?– (that's what H/O insurance is for).

But, the vast majority of burglaries take place in broad daylight - Usually through the back door or front door.

Why? A BG (bad guy) in the daytime, standing upright, and pretending to knock (while he pries door or twists the knob) actually draws little notice.

Decals are better than nothing. Except the fake decal thing is well known by all BGs, but they are only familiar with the most popular fakes, like the ones from Radio Shack, and a few others. .

If you want to go ''fake'', the CCTV cameras look absolutely real. They run about $30 each and are EZ to mount, one in front and one in back.

I like this one that someone jokingly told me about:

Put 2 big muddy work boots on front or back porch, and tape this note on door:
''Jim, me and Tiny went to Wal-Mart to get more ammo. Back in a minute. Wait outside Chopper is loose.''
