Westport Road Widening ?– News

On Thursday, January 19, Kentucky Department of Transportation officials held a public meeting at the Episcopal Church Home Memory Care Center about the widening of Westport Road. Excellent crowd (about 150). Key legislators attended: State Rep. Scott Brinkman, State Rep. Bob DeWeese, Metro Councilman Ken Fleming, Metro Councilman Kelly Downard; City Council Members of Graymoor-Devondale John Allen, Allyne Anderson, and John Vezeau; Mayors and council members from other affected cities.

Here are some key pieces of information:

The project has four phases.

Phase One (from Watterson to Lynn Way) is complete. A few corrective actions will be taken to smooth out the surface. The shiny surface of the roadway (especially at night) will disappear after a few months of use. The asphalt surface is a very durable roadway, and it takes a while for it to cure.

Phase Two (from Lynn Way to Hurstbourne) is in the middle of utility relocation. KDOT meets weekly with utilities to discuss progress. Electric and gas utilities have been slowed because their crews were dispatched to help out with hurricane repairs on the Gulf Coast. Contracts were let in this past December. None awarded yet. KDOT hopes to begin work in early spring 2006.

Phase Three (from Watterson to Hubbards). KDOT has acquired all rights-of-way. They expect to let contracts in the fall of 2006.

Phase Four (Westport Road interchange. Funding has been authorized. All but a few strips of rights-of-way have been acquired. KDOT expects to let contracts in December 2006. In current planning, they expect to have the interchange open in late 2008 or early 2009.

In 2006, Herr Lane will be resurfaced from Lime Kiln to LaGrange Road.

Westport Widening Project

Thank you Mr. Vezeau for your thorough
explanation - your usual excellent job.
I have lived in Graymoor-Devondale for
over 14 years and shortly after I moved
here there was a ''Neighborhoods'' acticle
about the widening at that point scheduled to begin in 1992. I sincerely hope this new schedule proves to be more
accurate. Thank you again.
