At a recent MENA Board Meeting, a frequent McKinley Park visitor raised concerns about trash and debris in the park. Among the problems he described were inadequate trash pickup, insufficient trash receptacles, and the failure of park users to pick up after themselves. In follow-up, MENA Board Member Charles Moore met with McKinley Park Manager, Randy Will, to explore solutions. Randy agreed this had been a problem, and added his concern about prior incidents of trashcans being thrown into the pond. To discourage such behavior, park maintenance staff moved the trash receptacles away from the pond. Unfortunately, it appears that some park users now won?’t take the extra effort to take their trash to the cans.
Park staff recently ordered five new trash receptacles ?— these will be secured to the ground with concrete, have a plastic coated mesh exterior, an internal liner, and an attached fiberglass lid.
MENA is looking for people who share these and other concerns and are interested in improving our beautiful McKinley Park. Some initial opportunities include:
Helping to fund the placement of a trash receptacle (estimated cost $300) ?— perhaps with an affixed plate bearing the donor?’s name.
Helping with litter pick up periodically.
Helping get nearby schools involved with a student park monitor program.
