Last month the MENA board voted to establish a new Public Safety and Neighborhood Impact Committee. I was appointed chairperson of this committee primarily because of my career as a Sacramento County prosecutor and my concern about East Sacramento crime and public safety issues.
I recently met with our neighborhood police officer Darby Lannom. Given some of the budget issues within the police department, we are fortunate to have Officer Lannom as our neighborhood police officer. He joined the Sacramento Police Department 2 ?½ years ago after serving as a Deputy Sheriff in Los Angeles County for 3 years. Lannom is the newest member of the Problem Oriented Policing unit (POP). He is a ?“proactive?” police officer who brings a lot of positive energy to the job.
Lannom?’s job is to focus on persistent crime problems within East Sacramento. He works with other agencies such as code enforcement, probation, and parole. When I asked Lannom how MENA members could help him do his job better he said we are his ?“eyes and ears within the neighborhood?”. He urges all East Sacramento residents to report specific complaints of ongoing criminal activity directly to him at 566-6401. When reporting a problem, make sure to include the location, description of cars, and time of the suspicious activity.
East Sac, traditionally, has had a low crime rate, so unless specific complaints are brought to Lannom?’s attention he will be directed to investigate criminal activity in other parts of the city.
If MENA members have any ideas regarding how the Public Safety and Neighborhood Impact can improve the overall quality of life in East Sac please bring them to MENA ?‘s attention at mena@eastsac.org or by phone at 452-4592.
