Welcome.
Meeting called to order at 7:30 by President Marty Doss
44 people in attendance plus two police officers

Crime Stats for Westover Division given by Officer Lim:
There were 5 residential B&E?’s (breaking and entering):
?• 612 East Woodlawn, electronics stolen
?• 1325 Drexmore
?• 4708 Gilmore, window smashed, nothing stolen but inside of house was vandalized
?• 4804 Gilmore. The suspects ran when they realized the homeowner was home
?• 5840 Murrayhill, electronics stolen
Vandalism
?• 5229 Seacroft, car vandalized
?• 4901 Murrayhill, car egged and vandalized

5863 Wedgewood- woman was attacked in her driveway. Her purse was stolen by force, requiring stitches. This happened at around 9am. The suspect is still unknown. Judy Bratton asked Officer Lim if it would be possible to employ a ?“reverse 911?” call to notify residents when incidents happen like this. Officer Lim offered to look into the matter, but said it would be hard to organize within the department.

Remember- if something looks suspicious, it probably is. Call 911 to report anything that you question.

Officer Lim also thanked us for the National Night Out party.

Collingswood Neighborhood joined our meeting this month (their meeting location had a broken air conditioner). Officer Ireland gave the crime stats for Collingswood:
?• Four residential breaking and enterings (all on Murrayhill between Woodlawn and Scaleybark)
?• 3 auto thefts
?• 3 larcenies from autos. Two suspects were arrested for this. They are members of a gang.
?• One incident of drugs, one incident of tires being cut
?• One hit and run, damage to property



Speaker Cam Coley with the Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion & Upgrade Project.
 The Sugar Creek Plant sits on over 100 acres. The plant was originally built in the 1920?’s
 It cleans 16-20 million gallons of waste water a day. The treated water is then release back into Sugar Creek
 With all the construction now, the plant is adding a new pump station plus another backup basin (to catch overflow from rain water)
 This expansion will allow the plant to process up to 34 million gallons of waste water a day by 2012
 Plant expansion goals:
?• Minimize the impact to the residential community
?• Control the traffic flow going in and out of the plant
?• Reduce light trespassing (lights in the plant that shine at night)
?• Eliminate odor
Debra Campbell has joined the stakeholders group that will be meeting regularly to discuss the plant expansion?’s impact on our neighborhood.
A resident asked about silt runoff and erosion control during the construction. Cam Coley said the construction people are supposed to have measures in place to decrease erosion.
A resident asked about all the new developments that are being built- who pays for the new water and sewer lines. Mr. Coley said the developers must pay for the new pipes to be put in following the standards of the water department. The new lines then become property of the water department.

National Night Out
Our 2007 August 7th, event was very successful considering the heat. The estimated attendance was over 500. Madison Park had lots of support this year. Target, Dr. Clark Hammock, and CPI Security were all major sponsors committing at least 500 dollars each. Target and Dr. Hammond have both already agreed to support next year?’s event. Target, the only Official National Sponsor of National Night Out, even sent several of their associates to our party to help staff it. They also supplied us with hundreds of Target Pinwheels. Keller Williams associates catered ice cream from the Marble Slab, Sue Valentine, our official website sponsor, had a booth with the History of Madison Park and a door prize. SouthPark Cycles supplied sports bottles for prizes. Montclaire Neighborhood Association was invited to set up a booth in exchange for providing a food item and an attraction. They cooked hot dogs and had a game. Charlotte Thunder from the Stratford Richardson YMCA opening in September provided excitement as they rumbled into the venue from the Valley Forge entrance. They marched from one end of the site to the other and performed in the center of the venue. We also had the talents of Holly Harper and Keith Shamel that played for attendees at the Valley Forge entrance. We appreciate the band always putting together something for the community at no charge. Thank you to Sergeant Lester, Officer Hairston and Officer Lim for making sure we had the barricades so we could host our event. A special Thanks to the 18 homes on Fairbanks that signed the petition that allowed us to shut down the street for this event. If you missed it, you missed rides, slides, dunk tank, all kinds of free food, and entertainment. We had plenty of free things to keep cool. Candy Bridges and Parks and Recreation get big Thanks for arranging the giant double slide and cotton candy. Candy also made snow cones to keep everyone cool. The mini parade Monday night contained 4 units this year a police car, Marty?’s jeep with the National Night Out banners on it, and open jeep (provided my Jennifer Kennedy on Seacroft), and followed up by CPI Security. President Doss also especially Thanks all the volunteers that helped to set up and break down the event in the heat. There are literally countless hours that go into making this happen. President Doss actually started working on producing our 2007 event the day after the August 1, 2006 event. We had two Charlotte Observer photographers on hand for a large part of the evening. Mayor Pro Tem Susan Burgess and City Council member Andy Dulin both attended and rode the trackless train. They both said our event was the largest and the best!

President Doss included at Montclaire?’s request their streets on the mini parade. We thank Officer Hairston for spending his day off escorting McGruff (played by VP, John Olsakovsky) Thank You John for wearing that hot costume in all that heat!

Madison Park would also like to thank Marty Doss for all the hard work he put into this event (and all of our other events). Marty works so hard for our neighborhood, and we hope he knows how much we appreciate it!

All Stop
Jennifer Kennedy on Seacroft has completed a petition with the required signatures to change the intersection of Fairbanks Road at Seacroft into an all stop. The petition requirements are much lower now than the ones Marty completed in Dec. 2006. They are just 600 feet from the intersection.

Lighting Repair (DPEC-75HMCV)
Tyvola Road
President Doss noticed the street lights are out on Tvyola Road from overhead flashing school light West of Londonderry Road to Flagstaff overhead flashing light a couple of weeks ago. Duke Energy called and said they would have to do an on spot analysis of the problem and it would be repaired within a couple of weeks.

Scaleybark Library Updates
?“After more than twenty years in the current building, Scaleybark Library will get a new and improved look. The new Scaleybark Library building is part of the light rail project that is scheduled to be handled by the group of developers known as Scaleybark Partners. In preparation for the project Library Director Charles Brown will meet with the Scaleybark community to obtain their opinions and feedback on the new building. Please attend the meeting that is planned to take place on Monday, September 24, 2007 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The Library is very eager to hear your thoughts, opinions and suggestions.

County Owned Land on Wentworth 4507 Wentworth Place
There is a piece of Property County owned on Wentworth where the home was torn down in 2004. The property is in the county flood plain. Back in Dec. someone asked on our website on the discussion page if the property could possibly be used as a public park or if a home not on a slab could be built. I suggested the person asking contact Parks and Recreation since building in the flood plain would not be allowed. Then on July 30th the following appeared on the discussion page. Wentworth Vacant Lot

Would it be possible to use the vacant lot on Wentworth Place as a Park area?

Perhaps a few benches-volleyball, horseshoes, dog park garden area?

It seems like such a waste to leave it empty.

President Doss once again provided the same response but this time made some inquires. He contacted County Commissioner Chair Jennifer Roberts. She said she would discuss with Parks and Recreation. He also contacted South Area Parks and Recreation Manager John McClelland. He requested exact location.

Since most neighborhoods have a park even though this would be very small it would be nice to actually have a park called Madison Park in Madison Park.

It would be something very simple with no structures as the anonymous writer suggested. The property is 75 feet of road frontage and 161 feet at the rear of the property. The sides are 186.4 feet and 168.41 feet. So it would make for a nice little park that the immediate neighbors of Madison Park could possibly enjoy.

Provided info on the torn down Woodlawn Road Church and the new construction, and the vacant lot behind it where new construction is taken place. Someone bought the vacant lot behind the condos and is building a house.

Lamont - Longwood possible future connector
There are plans but No funding to connect the two streets in the future as a bike connection. However CDOT says with favorable input from the community that the connectivity person (not one assigned currently) could possibly look at this option.

Murrayhill Streetlights update:
Matt Magnasco has the entire plan back from Duke Power and now has a little less than 90 days to get 60% of the Murrayhill/ White Oak residents to sign in approval to get the new lights installed. For more information and to see the plans, visit
