On July 23, 2007, Charlotte City Council approved a new ordinance (Chapter 5 ''Buildings and Building Regulations'') requiring the registration of all residential boarded up structures. The new ordinance requires registration of existing boarded up structures within six months from the adoption of the new ordinance. The deadline is January 23, 2008.
After January 23, 2008, all boarded up structures must be registered within 48 hours of boarding. Failure to register any boarded up residential structure may result in the issuance of civil penalties (500.00 for the first day and 50.00 for every proceeding day until brought into compliance).
