Dog Virus In Our Neighborhood!

Posted in: Madison Park
Our region is currently experiencing an outbreak in a respiratory disease complex. Here's the information you need to know about this outbreak from Stand For Animals' Medical Director, Dr. Elizabeth Welch, DVM.
While it doesn't have a specific name, the respiratory disease making the rounds has symptoms similar to kennel cough but is more severe. If left untreated the cough can turn to pneumonia.

This variant is extremely contagious. If your dog goes to daycare, dog parks, or boarding or grooming facilities, be on high alert for symptoms and be very cautious.
While information about this variant is limited, we recommend that your dog's Bordetella vaccine is up to date.

If you need an appointment for a Bordetella, please contact us at info@standforanimals.org or call us at 704-970-2711.

Like kennel cough, the symptoms of this respiratory disease can be a loud, hacking cough or retch. Sometimes this cough can sound like a "goose honk." Other symptoms can include runny eyes and nose, wheezing, and sneezing. If your dog seems depressed, lethargic, or isn't interested in eating that can also be a sign that they aren't feeling well.

Please contact us at info@standforanimals.org or call 704-970-2711 if your dog starts coughing and you are concerned.

A good day at the office for Dr. Welch is when: "I have improved the life of an owner by helping their pet. I also enjoy teaching my staff new procedures and helping them gain confidence in their positions."

Two weeks ago my little dog woke up at 5 am and was stuck in a severe reverse sneeze and having a seizure at the same time.   I had my neighbors dog spending the night.   This was like a sudden severe attack on my dog.   The vet said she was in heart failure and set me up with a speciality vet.   Over $800 dollars later the cardio vet said my dogs heart was perfect.    I told my vet I had to have something for my dog.  She was wheezing and making horrible noise.   Then her sister started the same thing.  I had some antibiotics and started them and also used a rescue inhaler and both seemed to make improvements.     The dose my vet gave my dogs was less than what I had started her on that was working.

2 weeks after this all started the above email was sent out.

My dogs go for a walk every day.  The do not socialize with other dogs.   We don't really even get close to other dogs.

So this is something very contagious.

I would strongly urge everyone to get the Bordetella vaccine.

I really thought my little dog was going to die in my arms more than once.   I spent an entire week trying to help her breath during the night.
