CONSIDER BIKING

Consider Biking Activity Update May 22, 2009
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Greetings! Mayor ridingThis past Wednesday, Consider Biking hosted the 6th Annual Ride of Silence. Over 700 cyclists gathered to RESPECTFULLY honor those fellow bicyclists that have been killed, injured and harassed by motorists.  Mayor "Bikin' Mike" Coleman even joined us this year.
  Heres a link to some more pictures. Although, pictures can't do justice to the size of this peleton.  It's humbling to represent this group.
 GroupOK - this is Jeff talking now. We founded this event 6 years ago in conjunction with COBAC (now Consider Biking) out of my personal passion & commitment to honor some of my recently killed cycling heroes. It saddens me, that in the ensuing 6 years, I've lost 5 more friends in cycling accidents. Additionally, like many of you, I've been heartbroken by the loss of another 10+ local cyclists....who I've come to know only after their deaths.
  Six years ago, the founding of our Ride of Silence, was not only a respectful education statement....but, more importantly, it was a conscious effort to kick-start our bicycle advocacy efforts (via COBAC/Consider Biking). It's worked.  You heard Mayor Coleman say on Wednesday night, that it was the first Ride of Silence that caught his attention, which opened the door for us to begin discussing the need for a comprehensive bike plan, and subsequent investment in bicycle accommodations.   Mayor speakingThe Ride of Silence was the seed that developed the momentum we see today.
 So, while the memory of 700+ bicyclists riding to memorialize the tragic deaths of local bicyclists like Tracy Corbin & David Hines is still fresh, I ask you to join Consider Biking so we can continue the desperately needed advocacy work to make our roads safer.
Its stunning that so many bicyclists will show up for the Ride of Silence. But we need more from you. We need you to "stand behind us" as a member. Yes, our elected officials take great notice when 700 bicyclists gather for an event, but, they'll take greater notice when we stand before them, representing thousands of members.
Consider Biking has an incredible list of successes in the last few years. This has been driven by the passion and commitment of a few. However, we can't expect this to continue without the support of our cycling community as a whole. Our future lay in your hands. Now's the time to support Consider Biking...so we can continue the "in the trenches" advocacy work that allows you to "just ride."
