The garbage in Clark County is packed in containers and shipped by barge up the Columbia River 160 miles to Boardman Oregon, and then trucked to the Finley Landfill. The movement of garbage to a landfill is very costly, and anything we can recycle will not only save money but will save space in the landfill.

Curbside Recycling:
Three bins are needed to start recycling. If you don't have a set, call Waste Connections at 892-5370. They will deliver bins to your house within 7 days.

The Green Bin is used for aluminum, tin cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic screw-top bottles with a neck smaller than its base, milk cartons and drink boxes. Labels don?’t need to be removed as we have been led to believe.
The Brown Bin is for newspapers, including advertisements.

The Tan Bin is for Mixed Paper, such as junk mail, magazines, phone books, paper bags, (the ones that are not recyclable at your grocery store) cereal and gift boxes and other clean paper.

Other items you can place next to your bins are, corrugated cardboard (flatten the boxes and no larger than 3' x 3'), motor oil (pour into one-gallon plastic milk jugs with screw-top lids and don't mix with any other liquids), scrap metal, (no larger than 24" in any direction and less than 35 pounds per piece, remove any plastic, wood or rubber that is attached). Make sure that you set your recycling bins out at the curb by 6:30 A.M. on your pick-up day. On windy days we can help reduce the litter problem, by stacking the bins with the paper bins on the bottom.

Old computers can be recycled by STRUT (Students recycling used technology). You can contact them at 696-7111.

You can recycle your yard debris through Waste Management. You can start by calling 737-2425 and have them deliver a 64 gallon wheeled cart that will be emptied every other week. You can have a second 32 gallons bin at no extra cost. There are a few different pick-up plans available that you might want to use, so be sure to ask for more information.

Recycling Household Hazardous Waste
There are two locations to drop off your Household Hazardous Waste. The one nearest our neighborhood is the Central Transfer and Recycling Center. Located at 11034 NE 117th Avenue. If you have questions as to what you can drop off call 256-8482. They are open Saturday and Sunday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The other location is West Van Materials Recovery Center, 6307 NW Lower River Road, at 737-1727. They are open Friday and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Both places are free of charge.

Some of the items that can be dropped off at these locations are, disinfectants, oven cleaner, aerosol cans, batteries (flashlight type), floor cleaners, caustic cleaners, kerosene, turpentine, solvents, paints, paint thinner, fertilizer, insecticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, antifreeze, degreasers, brake fluid and waste oils just to name a few. Please don't mix any of these items together unless directed to do so. There is a limit of 25 gallons or 200 lb. per trip. You can identify most Hazardous Materials from the labels with words such as poison, corrosive, caustic, volatile, explosive, danger, flammable, caution and warning. Please deliver the products in their original container if possible.

You CANNOT drop off explosives, waste medical supplies, asbestos, ammunition or radioactive material.

Please buy recycled products whenever possible and try to avoid buying toxic materials. Thank you.
