Animal Control in Mesa does not much of anything. The officer that I spoke to the other day about the poisonings of my cats is in fact the person that gave me MIS-information about the Cat Killer case. First, Animal Control is not investigating the matter - it's in the hands of a Mesa PD detective. The AC officer implied that their office was still investigating it, but they are not. Which is just as good. Second, when I asked him whose decision it was to drop the charges he said "I can't tell you that but there were several people involved." First, yes he can, and SHOULD tell me that because he is a public service employee paid for by tax dollars. Second, it was not a decision "made by several people" but rather one made by the prosecutor. AC doesn't think there's evidence of torture because they never think there's evidence of animal cruelty. They have failed - twice now - to do anything about animal cruelty in my neighborhood in spite of evidence; in fact, they really don't even do anything approaching what could be called an investigation. Personally I think as a City office they ought to be shut down and just let the real police investigate animal cruelty crimes. Second, there is evidence of torture in the Cat Killer case because of the injuries to the animals' bodies. Also, depriving an animal of care (e.g., taking it away from its owner) is an act of cruelty defined in AZ state law. If the AC officer knew that, he wouldn't be saying things like there's little evidence of cruelty. The reason AC says things like that ("there's no evidence of ---") is because they don't want to get in trouble for not doing what they're supposed to be doing. What a crying shame that, once again, an office that should be an advocate for animals and their owners is just a waste of taxpayer money. I'll give you a call maybe this weekend sometime.
