Our Season For Change

Have you ever thought, I am not going to vote because it doesn’t matter, my vote won’t really count ? If so, think again. As the November 2004 election is on the horizon we have an opportunity, like the nature of the leaves on a tree, to create a collective change. A change in the number of decent jobs we can apply for, whether or not we or someone we know will have health insurance and whether or not USA service men and women will live or die, just to name a few of the many things that our vote will mean to this community.
Right now the USA is experiencing the highest rate of unemployment since 1944. Jobs are steadily being outsourced to other countries, leaving entire communities hopeless and without doable income. Families are actually having to choose whether to eat or go to the doctor. Senior citizens are losing prescription drug benefits that they are entitled to under Medicare. In addition, the death of our troops in Iraq beams at a crucial lost of over one thousand, viable citizens. Home foreclosures are at a record high through out the United States and millions of children are still being left behind in the nations school systems. Simply put, if we vote, our marked ballots will be like the first fallen leaves from our Nation’s trees, lining our streets with the hopes of change. Remember, if the tree doesn't shed her leaves in the Fall (her season of change ) then that tree will be unable to blossom in the seasons to come. Go to the polls and vote this November, take a friend, a neighbor or a relative and collectively shake a change for the better. Vote November 2, 2004 ! -Tracy McCullough

Voting Is Our Gift to History

We have all heard the struggles of African-Americans fighting for their right to vote and we still don’t get out and register to vote. Some of us have lived through the unspoken crimes of African-Americans fighting for their right to vote and we still don’t come out In large numbers to vote. We have all read about the different campaigns to get out and register to vote and we ignore it as if it’s not our problem. This is your right, VOTE. Your right to VOTE can be taken away. Any questions? Dawes residents who are unable to get to the polls to vote due to lack of transportation, on Election day, Tuesday, November 2, I will be available to take you to the voting polls beginning 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM. Take A Stand and Vote! -Christine Bradshaw

Hidden Treasures In our Community

When is the last time you really experienced a warm and pleasant customer service from a business? If you have to think about it, then you are missing out on yet another hidden jewel in our neighborhood. I’m talking about the blue and white house called the Blue Ribbon Cleaners located at 8970 Wyoming off the corner of Oakman Blvd. Margaret Fryer worked at Blue Ribbon Cleaners for years before the previous owner sold the business to her and her husband. They have been the proud owners of the business for six years. For 37 years, Mr. James Fryer worked with the City of Detroit Department of Transportation as the Superintendent of Operations Department of Transportation. He currently sits on the Advisory Commission for the Department of Transportation as a consultant.
Mr. Fryer is very proud to share they are a black owned family business that wanted to stay in the City of Detroit and give back to the community. He is quick to point out that the business is slow and they are not sure how long they can do it. Customers don’t patronize smaller cleaner businesses like they used to and let alone the ones in other neighborhoods. This is a common theme he hears from other small cleaners in other areas. A lot of folks in this business are selling their cleaner business to larger cleaners or for different businesses all together. They want readers to know that they are a committed family with good family moral values and are working hard to make a difference in this community. To show your love and financial support, Blue Ribbon Cleaners is opened Monday – Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and closed on Sunday and Holidays. For details of their specials and prices, please stop by or call
(313) 834-9570.
The professionalism, courteous and quality result is well worth the investment.
