McKinley Community Behavior Standards

McKinley NRP Crime/Safety Issue Group

Overview
The neighborhood of McKinley Community, including residents, property owners, the faith community and businesses are united in the desire for a neighborhood that has attractive community space, is conducive to attracting more and better businesses, and offers a safe, hospitable environment where people are respected and valued. Therefore the McKinley Community is taking a proactive stand in our neighborhood in partnership with city, county and other agencies to achieve this outcome.

Children:
Our children are a precious resource, and they are the future of our neighborhood. All of our children deserve the care and concern of all of us. We ask the residents of our community to care for their children. We will ask Hennepin County Family and Children Services to work with us in instances of child abuse or neglect, to provide for the care of our families and their children.

Respect for People and Property:
We believe all people deserve respect. We will not tolerate harassment, trespassing, public urination, littering or graffiti. We will work with Housing Inspections, the Minneapolis Police Department and CCP/SAFE for the enforcement of ordinances and statutes.

Neighborhood Appearance:
Properties will be maintained in a manner that is respectful to our neighbors. Littering, graffiti, overgrown vegetation, eroded yards, alleys filled with garbage and broken glass, and generally uncared for property promote a negative image for our neighborhood. We will ask Solid Waste and Recycling and Housing Inspections to enforce ordinances.

Violence, Drug Use/Dealing, Crime:
We believe in a violence-free community. Drug selling and open drug use threatens the safety, stability and livability of our neighborhood. We ask for aggressive prosecution against chronic offenders who sell and/or use drugs, and the Hennepin County courts use these standards as a mandate for action.

Animals:
Dogs should always be leashed, fenced, or supervised. If your animal spends time outdoors, please provide food, water and shelter, and be sure to clean up after it, whether on your property or someone else's. Animal Control will be called in the event of a loose animal. Animal fighting will not be tolerated in the McKinley Community.

Noise:
We believe that everyone has the right to peace and quiet. Noise can be an intrusion. Music from car stereos, radios or boom boxes is too loud if it can be heard 50 feet or two houses away, or if it can be heard inside another house with windows closed, or if it interrupts another's activities. Car horns are only to be used in emergency situations and are not doorbells. Dogs must be controlled for barking or a noise citation may be issued.

The only way to keep our neighborhood safe and secure is to keep our eyes open, report suspicious behavior, and know who our neighbors are. We cannot be afraid to get involved - it is the only way to maintain the good neighborhood we have. There is no neutral ground in neighborhoods. You are either part of the solution or part of the problem. Join the rest of us by becoming part of the solutions.
