I just thought I would take a few moments and inform you all about some spam email tricks, and what works and what doesn't.
1). If you get spam email, and at the bottom of the page, it says ''click here'' or ''go here'' to unscribe, DON'T DO IT. It is thier way of CONFIRMING your email address as a good one, and they often then take and SELL your email address to other spam sources.
2) Blocking the sendor's address - does it work? Not often, as most of this spam mail is comming from a computer generated mailing program. Where it says from jennie123@whatever.com, the computer ramdomly generates the ''jennie123'' portion of the incomming address. You probably will get more from somthing like sam444@whatever.com. If you use Yahoo mail (like I do), mark the mail as SPAM as yahoo takes ANY mail from ''whatever.com'' user and automatically sends it to your junk/bulk mail folder. If you don't use Yahoo, check your own service and see if they have something similar. If you don't have this feature - then go ahead and block the sender, knowing that eventually your blocked address list will get full, and you will have to remove some of them.
3) HTML CODE in email. Most spam emails are written with HTML code. You will know if it is HTML if the email contains pictures or graphics in it. Often, hidden in the HTML code of the email is an address verification code - which you never see. So, just by OPENING the email, you have verified your email address as being a good one - again, opening yourself up to your email being sold to other such services. If your email service will allow you to TURN OFF HTML, do so. Then, if you get an email from someone you know and trust, you can turn it on JUST FOR THAT EMAIL.
4) Emails that say ''if you send out 50 of these in 10 minutes you will receive....''. There is NO WAY that the number of emails you send out are tracked by Bill Gates, Disneyland, or anyone else. This stuff is just someone's idea of a bad joke. Ignore this stuff and don't pass it along. The same goes for '' Send out 10 and your wish will come true.... garbage mail !!''
5) Attachments that cause a virus. If you receive an attachment that has an EXE extension on it (such as xmas.exe or joke.exe) DON'T OPEN IT unless you KNOW the sender and you TRUST what they send you is virus free. Also.. ALWAYS scan ANY attachment BEFORE you open it. Most email services now come with built-in scanning software. The best advice is that if you aren't sure - DELETE IT. Virus can play havoc to your system before you even realize it.
6) Emails that say - Run this program on your PC .. NEVER DO IT. (I learned the hard way on this one - crashed a perfectly good system). Again, if you don't know exactly what the attachment does, delete it. I'd rather throw away a good joke file than take the risk.
7) When forwarding emails to several of your friends at the same time, it is best if you use the BCC or Blind Carbon Copy feature, and put your own name in to ''TO:'' field. I know that I really HATE it when my email address is passed on to people I don't know. I'm sure you have all received emails that contain 100 email addresses of people you don't know. All it takes is ONE of those getting into the wrong hands of someone who SELLS addresses to the spammer companies. So, before you forward something, first delete all the email info FIRST before passing it on, and HIDE those emails addresses that you are sending to.
Hope these few little suggestions help you all !!!!
