A Mesa homeowner shot and wounded two people he said drove by and opened fire at his house late Sunday.
During the exchange of gunfire in the 1000 block of West Naranja Avenue, a shotgun blast shattered the bedroom window of two teenage girls, and a bullet penetrated a parked vehicle?’s engine compartment.
But none of the home?’s eight residents were injured, police said.
After the 10:30 p.m. shootout, the occupants of a 1999 Nissan Altima drove to a nearby strip mall, where they called friends to take them to a hospital.
A 20-year-old was critically injured by multiple gunshot wounds, while a 24-year-old male was shot once.
Police did not release names.
The incident was not random and began with an earlier altercation between the homeowner?’s grown son and the other men, police spokesman Sgt. Chuck Trapani said.
The son told authorities the Altima followed him home and his father armed himself with a rifle in preparation.
?“I?’m just doing what comes natural ?— protecting my family,?” the father said.
Mesa police ask witnesses or anyone with information to call (480) 644-2211.
