Major Events from 1980 to 2004 for the MDLDC

1980 - The Metropolitan Denver Local Development Corporation, MDLDC, a private non-profit was formed with the purpose of revitalization and preservation of business and neighborhood areas.

1980 - The area between 2nd Ave. and Bayaud Ave. was designated a neighborhood revitalization District. This made it eligible for City and Federal community development funding.

1981 - Improvements were installed by the City and the Improvement and Maintenance District were put into place with property owners assessing themselves.

1982 - The Maintenance District was deemed fully operational.

1985 - The Mayan Theater and the 1st and Broadway building were commissioned as historic structures utilizing among other funds, storefront improvement loans from the City.

1988 - The MDLDC Board was reconsolidated to include representatives of adjacent neighborhoods bringing the total of Board members to a maximum of 9, although the minimum of 5 used. This improved the human resources within the MDLDC.

1990 - The level of service was increased with the support of property owners. The District began to have thoughts of expansion beyond its existing 2-block area.

1994 - The District was required to meet Sunset provisions for assessment on the improvement District. Property owners approved continuation of the District.

1995 - The District expanded into the Urban renewal area to the South of Alameda along Broadway tripling; the size of the Improvement District. This area is called "The Marketplace Section".

1999 - The District expanded again to incorporate 2 new sections of 2-block areas along Broadway hat made the Improvement District contiguous from 2nd Ave. to I-25 with a spur running from Broadway to Cherokee along Alameda. These areas are referred to as the "Post Office Section" and the "Design Center Section".

2000 - The improvement and maintenance began on the "Post Office Section" and the "Design Center Section".

2001 - The "Post Office Section" and the "Design Center Section" improvements began in mid-November of 2000 and are slated for final walk-through in September 2001.

About MDLDC

The Metropolitan Denver Local Development Corporation (MDLDC) is under contract with the city of Denver to provide maintenance and supervision of the Broadway Plaza Pedestrian Mall commonly referred to as the District. The original District was a charter member of the Neighborhood Business Revitalization Districts, dating back to 1981. The District is comprised of properties along South Broadway from Second Avenue to Interstate-25, including a westerly spur along Alameda Avenue to Cherokee Street. There are 151 properties hosting 316 different businesses in the District. Our primary objective is to create a pleasant business environment that is pedestrian friendly.
