Community Profile and Demographics

The City of Chandler, Arizona was founded in 1912 and incorporated in 1920. Since its early beginnings, Chandler is a vibrant, diverse community. Below is a brief community profile:

  • Economic Change - From agricultural town toward a high-tech industrial city
  • Growing Population - 9,531 in 1960 to 242,193 in August 2013
  • Housing Units - 97,000 in August 2013
  • Average Household Income - $81,567 in 2012
  • Incorporated Area - 70 square miles
  • Centerline Street Miles - 781
  • Developed Parks - 53

The City operates under the Council-Manager form of government in which policy-making and administration are two separate entities. The following takes place under this form of government:

  • Only elected officials can set policy
  • City Councilmembers select and supervise a professional City Manager
  • The City Manager serves as the chief executive whose main responsibilities include appointing department heads and overseeing the day-to-day operations of City government

Ocotillo Named Best Neighborhood

Ocotillo selected best neighborhood by AZ Central.com on 5/1/07. That was the result from Az Republic's annual reader poll.
Today, the 1900 acre Ocotillo neighborhood near Queen Creek and Alma School roads, with its 167 acres of artificial lakes, golf course, clubhouse and shopping, is one of the Valley's premier communities.
