I'm sorry to read about your double loss and my prayers are with my fellow soldier's family.
The real horror of any war, aside from witnessing the horror of war, is having to notify next of kin that their husband, wife, son, or daughter has been KIA. I thank my lucky stars that I was never called upon to perform that duty.
I will be honest in my sentiment that I do not support the war in Iraq. Politically, the on-the-ground commanders briefed Rumsfield and the Joint Chiefs prior to moving into Iraq as to the number of troops it would take to complete the task of removing Saddam and restoring democracy to the Iraqi people. It's my recollection 300,000 troops were requested which did not include our coalition partners (all 5-6 of them).
Rumsfeld, in his political stooge wisdom, told the commanders they'd have to make due with 125,000 troops. We went in with 125,000 and look where we're at today. Rummy got his golden parachute and was the first to bail. Too bad the parachute opened. While insurgency continues to grow, death and maimings continue to mount, Rummy still collects his government pension, earns a nice stipend from speaking his engagements and still collects dividends on his military industrial complex investments. I can only hope Rummy dies a slow, agonizing death and then ROTS in hell!!!
On an aside, thank you DF for your comment. I know we've had our differences in the past but I greatly appreciate your sentiment which I know you personally stand behind.
Keep you chin up nebl. It sounds like you had two really great friends.
