Recently, in an attempt to do a tiny bit for the environment, I made 2 canvas bags to take shopping. I figure that if I can put groceries in those, I'll save probably 2-3 plastic bags every week that I won't have to take back for recycling.
Well, I've used them in grocery stores with no problem, but I took them to Wal-Mart last week. To my surprise, I wasn't allowed to take them in the store! The ''greeter'' asked if I had a ''return.'' I said they were to carry my purchases in and she said, ''Oh, I don't think those are allowed in the store.''
I asked her why it made a difference and she said, ''Well, you could put things in there and not pay for them.''
I told her that since the purpose is to put my purchases in the bags, I would assume that the checker would certainly notice if I'd tried to steal anything! Again she said, ''well, you can't bring those in. I'm sorry.''
Is it just me or is there something strange about this policy? I have relatives in much larger cities who carry their bags everywhere and use them in every store for every purchase and they have never had a problem in a Wal-Mart or a Target or anyplace else. Why here? Anybody work at Wal-Mart who can give me an answer? As of right now, I won't be going back to Wal-Mart unless I absolutely can't find what I want or an alternative to it.
