Pedestrian Deaths Up Sharply in 2006

WASHINGTON - The number of pedestrians killed this year in the District has reached 24. Leaders say that's the highest number since 1997.
The latest fatality happened around 5:30 a.m. Friday when Francis Joseph Ryan, 26, was struck while crossing the street in the Columbia Heights area of Northwest.

Erik Linden, spokesman for the city's transportation department, says so far this year, seven more pedestrians have been killed than in all of 2006.

Linden says the number of pedestrian fatalities is up in part because people are walking more.

Well it's obvious. ''Come Monday'' America has to either ban walking, or ban driving. At least in D.C.
