The Big Setup

by Keith Koffler on September 2, 2011, 10:57 am

President Obama started his reelection campaign last Spring. But things will really get going next Thursday night.

That’s when Obama will offer a series of small scale proposals that at best will help the economy on the margins. But they may help Obama get reelected.

Here’s why.

The White House itself, in a report released yesterday, predicted that economic growth will remain weak through much of next year and that the unemployment rate will be about at 8.5 percent on Election Day.

OBAMA HAS ALREADY FAILED TO FIX THE ECONOMY. IT’S OVER.

So what’s going on here?

Some of the proposals Obama offers up Thursday may pass Congress. But most will be rejected by Republicans. And then he will blame the GOP for failing to fix the economy.

The Republicans are being set up.

The White House has recognized the fun of blaming George W. Bush for the disastrous economy is over. They need a new boogeyman. Enter John Boehner, the Tea Party, and the House Republican caucus.

Obama must make his proposals as big a deal as possible, so that everyone knows how hard he’s “trying to help.” That’s why he’s scheduled an address to Congress. No higher profile than that.

And he must calibrate his ideas as carefully as possible so that they seem like they should be palatable to the GOP. He’ll offer ideas that some Republicans have supported, but which in the current high-deficit environment will be rejected.

Then he will talk about his largely meaningless initiatives every chance he gets. And then later, every chance he gets, he will talk about how Republicans rejected them and ruined his noble crusade.

It’s a huge gamble, because Obama has already decided not to take the sweeping measures needed to help the economy. Instead, he’s been running for reelection.

Absent major fiscal reforms that take a significant bite out of entitlements, the government’s fiscal picture and the overall economic outlook are not going to improve. Stimulus has not worked. What the economy needs is confidence, and to build confidence we must get a handle on the federal debt. And a president who has shown no leadership on the issue – who in fact has vastly increased spending and the debt – and who is instead trying to politicize the debate, is not going to lead us to that particular Promised Land.

So if things are not going to improve, there really is no choice other than to blame someone else.

Get ready for the nastiest political campaign season you’ve ever seen. From the people who brought you hope and change.

"Obama's Dishonest Free-Trade Demogoguery

1:00 PM, Sep 6, 2011 • By MARK HEMINGWAY

Publicly, the White House claims to support all three agreements [free-trade deals with Colombia, South Korea and Panama]. It even said in July that Republicans are the ones standing in the way of ratification. But this is absurd because Congress can’t ratify trade agreements until the president submits them for congressional approval. He knows as well as I do that once he does, all three would garner wide bipartisan support.

What’s the real holdup? For three years, the administration has delayed finalizing these deals because unions have been extracting concessions in exchange for their support. Early on, they demanded further concessions and political reforms from our trading partners, all of which have been satisfied. Now, they’re demanding taxpayer funds for worker training programs that many believe are not only duplicative and costly but may not even be effective. Still, I and others have told the president we are prepared to allow this program to move ahead for a vote as a sign of good faith and to move the trade deals forward.

Hmm. So it seems that the hold up is really unions, who -- coincidentally, I'm sure -- Obama and the Democratic party's largest source of campaign cash, and just happen to be ardently opposed to free trade.

Not that this is in anyway surprising. What is surprising is the amount of hubris that the White House posesses here. Why would they attempt to beat Republicans over the head with an issue that is quite transparently their fault? I'm sure Mitch McConnell's op-ed has someone in the White House speechwriting shop doing some hasty revision ahead of Thursday's speech, but I'm confident that many other disingenuous blame-the-GOP talking points will somehow make the final address."

And speaking of unions, did you see Obamas appearence today in Detroit, the poster-city of failed union control?  He stood on the stage with the latest Hoffa, who called non-union folks "son of a bitches", and vowed that they were his soldiers when he went to war with them.  Our President was not critical of such hate speech, and instead threw praise Hoffas way, smiling all the while.  All the while, the approval ratings continue to tank.  I can't wait for November 2012.

So much for that civility that obama called for after the Giffords shooting - which by the way had nothing to do with civility - the guy is looneytunz. Our prez is one of the biggest finger-pointing, blaming prez ever. He has been setting up the stage for the "Big Blame" after  his big blow out on thurs. If congress doesn't see the clear path to jobs - only a clear path to more debt - and don't jump to make all those temp jobs - cause how long can we build roads  with winter close by in a large portion of the US - we will have big time blaming of congress. I noticed the NBC is quick to mention the horrible approval rating of congress and pontificate about that and THEN mention obama's miserable approval rating. BB saus that the dems eat their own, I'm glad I'm not a dem as that would leave me with a really bad taste in my mouth, not to mention bad breath!
