Bangkok blast suspects 'targeting Israeli diplomats'

A group of Iranians detained after
explosions in Thailand's capital Bangkok were intending to target two Israeli
diplomats, Thai police say.
There were no further details of the individual targets, but planning was
said to be at an advanced stage.
Officials have linked Tuesday's Bangkok blasts to attacks on Israeli
diplomats in Georgia and India on Monday.
Israel has accused Tehran of being behind all three attacks. Tehran has
denied any involvement.
Two men are in custody in Bangkok over Tuesday's explosions, a third man was
arrested in Malaysia trying to board a flight to Iran, and a fourth suspect is
still at large, believed by immigration officials to be back in Iran.
"Their targets were individuals, Israeli diplomats, not the Thai people,"
said national police chief Priewpan Damapong.
There had been widespread speculation of a plot aiming at Israelis, but Mr
Priewpan is the first Thai official elaborate on the target.
He said the suspects are likely to be charged with possession of explosive
devices and attempted murder.

The comments by a Thai Police Chief that the target in Bangkok was Israeli
diplomats seems to back up Israel's claim that it is facing a co-ordinated
campaign.
Such targeted killings of people conscious of their security are not always
easy, but still the events in Bangkok show more ambition than capability. What
will worry Israel though is the question of how many teams might have been sent
out with the chance one might be successful, or that those responsible might
redouble their efforts to make up for failures.
Iran has denied it is involved saying allegations are a smear to try and
undermine its relationships with others. Of course Iran believes Israel has
carried out almost identical acts in Tehran killing scientists linked to the
nuclear programme.
The alarm was raised when an explosion ripped the roof
of their house, in central Bangkok.
Mr Sedaghatzadeh and Mr Khazaei managed to flee the house after the
explosion, but Mr Moradi was injured and tried to catch a taxi.
When the taxi refused to stop for him, he threw at least one bomb at it,
according to police.
He was later cornered by police and attempted to throw a bomb at them.
However, he seriously injured himself with the device, and lost both of his
legs.
Four other people were injured in the incident.
The Bangkok blasts came a day after two attacks targeting Israeli diplomats
in India and Georgia.
An Israeli diplomat was injured in the Delhi attack, after a motorcycle rider
attached an explosive device to her car.
Around the same time a bomb beneath an Israeli diplomat's car in Tbilisi,
Georgia, was found and defused.
Thai police said the devices they found were similar to the ones used in
Delhi and Georgia.
And Israeli officials have repeatedly stated that the Iranian regime was
behind all three attacks, in league with Lebanon's Islamist militant group
Hezbollah.
Several suspected members of Hezbollah were arrested last month in Bangkok,
though police have not publicly linked them to the detained Iranians.
Tehran officials have accused Israel of staging the attacks as part of a
"psychological war" aimed at deflecting attention from what they say are Israeli
killings of nuclear scientists in Iran.

The news of the killing of Iran’s senior nuclear scientist immediately gripped the country’s media, with some appealing for revenge attacks against targets in Israel and the United states.
Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, 32, was killed Wednesday by a magnetic bomb placed on his car by a motorcyclist in the capital Tehran. Iranian state-run media were quick to point the finger at Israel and the United States.
Iranian officials expressed their deepening anger and outrage at both countries, with media sources close to the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, such as the Kayhan newspaper, going as far as signaling that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps might carry out revenge assassinations.
“We should retaliate against Israel for martyring of our young scientist,” The New York Times quoted Kayhan’s general director, Hossein Shariatmadari, as saying. Referring to the Israelis, Shariatmadari, who was appointed by Khamenei, wrote, “These corrupted people are easily identifiable and readily within our reach.”
The supreme leader himself said Thursday that those behind the killing of the scientist would be punished.
"We will continue our path with strong will…and certainly we will not neglect punishing those responsible for this act and those behind it," the official IRNA news agency quoted the leader as saying.
Khamenei directly accused the US and Israel of being behind the assassination and pointed out the country’s nuclear program will not be shelved.
“This cowardly terror has been designed or helped by the intelligence services of the CIA and Mossad and shows that the arrogant powers have reached a dead end in the face of the strong Iranian nation,” Khamenei said, extending his condolences to Roshan’s family. In a message posted on his website, Khamenei said Iran's nuclear program "does not depend on any one person" and "we are going to continue with determination and energy on this path."
Compared to these strong words, the official reaction from the Iranian government was moderate. It assured that Iran would not be dissuaded from its right to peaceful nuclear energy.
Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Mohammad Khazaee, said in a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon that the killing was part of a campaign of terrorist acts against Iran committed by “certain foreign quarters,” and demanded that the UN Security Council investigates and condemns the crime.
Meanwhile, top US officials have gone out of their way to issue strongly worded denials of responsibility. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton denied her country’s role in the killing and the US administration condemned the attacks.
On the other hand, Israeli officials, who suspect that Iran is working on building nuclear weapon and regard Iran as their country’s primary enemy, have not categorically denied any Israeli role in the killing.
Tensions between Iran and the West have particularly increased in the past weeks, when Tehran announced its plans to conduct the "greatest naval war games” in the Strait of Hormuz – the artery for almost one quarter of the world’s oil traffic. The announcement prompted the US to deploy its warships to the Persian Gulf area, including aircraft carriers.
But Jamal Abdi from the National Iranian American Council says the main purpose of the assassination was to isolate Iran – while the interested party may come from within the Persian country.
Report: Mossad chief visited New Delhi days before attack on Israeli officials
Times of India claims Tamir Pardo told local officials Israelis felt safer in India than in Turkey or South America, did not provide specific warning of New Delhi attack.
Mossad chief Tamir Pardo visited New Delhi just days before an attack on Israeli officials in the Indian capital this week, Indian media reported on Thursday, highlighting the extent to which Israeli intelligence was in the dark regarding possibility of a terror attack taking place in the country.
On Monday, the wife of an Israeli diplomat was moderately wounded when a car bomb exploded outside of Israel's embassy in New Delhi.
The attack was one of three targeting Israeli officials abroad this week, with failed attempts to strike at diplomats reported the same day in Tbilisi and on the following day in Bangkok.
Neither attack was preceded by a specific intelligence warning.
Citing Indian officials, a report in the Times of India on Thursday placed Pardo's visit a week ago, saying he met with the heads of local intelligence. The report even quoted the Mossad chief as saying that Israeli citizens felt safer in India than in Turkey, the Caucusus or South America.
Pardo reportedly led a delegation of top Mossad officials, who discussed the possibility of Iranian counter attacks against Israeli targets. However, according to the report, the possibility of an attack taking place in New Delhi was not discussed.
The Times of India report also indicated that Israel's deputy envoy to India, Yahel Vilan, and the embassy's security officer, Shahar Gal Nero, sent a letter on February 1 to the New Delhi police warning of the possibility of attacks targeting Israeli citizens ahead of the anniversary of Mughniyah's assassination, and following attacks against Iranian nuclear scientists.
However, the letter did not detail any specific intelligence regarding the possibility of an attack taking place on Indian soil.
Indian intelligence officials were quoted as saying they feared increased use of magnetic bombs such as that used in the New Delhi attack.
One source indicated to the newspaper that an Indian intelligence agency had intercepted a phone call mentioning that Pakistani terrorists could make use of such explosive devices.
A report of the phone call was passed on to all Indian security agencies shortly prior to the attack on Monday, which represented the first time such bombs were known to have been used in India.
Kuwaiti report: Iran attempts to assassinate Barak intercepted during Singapore visit
Also on Thursday, the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida reported that Singapore security forces had intercepted a joint Iranian-Hezbollah attempt to assassinate Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak during a recent visit to the country.
Senior Israeli defense officials told Haaretz on Thursday that the report had no basis in reality.
The al-Jarida article, which was attributed to the newspaper itself without giving the name of any specific writer, claims to cite senior Israeli sources as saying that the assassination was prevented after Mossad informed Singapore of the plot.
According to the report, the terror squad received abundant and precise intelligence concerning the timetable of Barak's visit to the country last week, and planned to track his movements and eventually assassinate him at his hotel.
Upon learning of the plan, Mossad informed Singapore's security agencies, who then arrested three of the squad's members. They were jointly interrogated by local authorities and Mossad officials who arrived to attempt to extract information concerning other squads that might be operating in Asia and planning to target Israelis.
Al-Jarida was founded in 2007, and has since published several exclusive reports based on Israeli sources, in what is seen in the Arab world as a way for Israel to deliver messages to Lebanon and Syria.
One of the paper's reports, probably backed by sources in the Prime Minister's Office, eventually led to the removal of Uzi Arad as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's National Security Advisor.
Lebanese pundits have argued in the past that the newspaper, considered to be independent, was financially backed by Israel and serves to deliver Israeli propaganda.
Mossad attacks Israeli embassies and blames Iran
On Monday, Israeli Mossad assassins carried out Iranian nuclear scientist assassination-style coordinated attacks on Israeli embassy cars in New Delhi and Tbilisi. No Israeli staff was killed in both cases. In Delhi car bombing, wife of an embassy staff was injured when two persons on a motorbike threw ‘something’ on the car outside the Israeli embassy. The local driver of the Israeli embassy car in Tbilisi realizing something was wrong with the car and called the authorities who neutralized the device and save both car and the non-Jewish driver.
War criminals, Benji Netanyahu and Avigdor Liberman blamed both Iran and Lebanese Hizbullah behind the attacks. Israeli poodle, Hillary Clinton, immediately condemned the attacks.
Tehran has refuted its involvement in both cases which is supported by such assassination activities in the past. Tehran has claimed that Israelis attacked their own embassies to demonize Iran and fuel anti-Iran hysteria in the US and Europe.
Both Iran and Hizbullah have zero record of assassinating Israeli or other foreign leaders, diplomats or scientists. Contrary to that Israeli Mossad was involved in the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and his younger brother, Robert F. Kennedy. Mossad also assassinated Hizbullah military and political leaders, Lt. Col. Massoud Ayyaz (2001) and Imad Mughniyah (2008) – and five Iranian scientists associated with Iran’s nuclear program – not to mention over three dozens of Hamas senior leaders including its founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin on March 22, 2004.
Israel’s senior military and intelligence analyst, Ronen Bergman, wrote in the NYT Magazine last month that Israeli Mossad was behind the attacks on five Iranian scientists. He mentioned several incidents of targeted assassinations, at least couple of which are very similar to the manner in which the Israeli diplomat’s car was attacked in New Delhi yesterday. Ronen mentioned the assassination of Majid Shahriari and Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, who were killed after motorcyclists attacked ‘limpet mines’ or ‘magnet bombs’ to their cars and sped away. A third scientist Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, was targeted similarly, but he escaped.
Mossad is known for its close relations with Indian and Georgian intelligent agencies. Indian RAW is known to have used Mossad and CIA services to carry-out bombing, assassinations and other terrorist activities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
India is Israel’s top military customers after China. Until Georgia-Russian war in 2008 – Israel-Georgia military coopertion was unmatched. In addition to the supply of arms and military training, Israel maintained two military bases in Georgia – thanks to country’s Jewish Defense Minister Davit Kezerashvili, a Hebrew-speaking former Israeli. On August 12, 2008, Israeli daily Jerusalem Post had reported: “Georgian Prime Minister Vladimer Gurgenidze made a special call to Israel Tuesday morning to receive a blessing from one of the Haredi community’s most important rabbis and spiritual leaders, Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman”.

IS HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF?
In 1954, Israeli agents working in Egypt planted bombs in several buildings, including a United States diplomatic facility, and left evidence behind implicating Arabs as the culprits. The ruse would have worked, had not one of the bombs detonated prematurely, allowing the Egyptians to capture and identify one of the bombers, which in turn led to the round up of an Israeli spy ring.
Some of the spies were from Israel, while others were recruited from the local Jewish population. Israel responded to the scandal with claims in the media that there was no spy ring, that it was all a hoax perpetrated by "anti-Semites".

This gloomy assumption was verified and was revealed to be a cruel and shocking fact, by the declaration of the accused Victorin Ninyo in the military court in Cairo that was published this morning. [According to this declaration] she was tortured during the interrogation which preceded the trial and by that torture they extracted from her false confessions to crimes which did not happen. The government of Israel strongly protests this practice, which revives in the Middle East the methods used by the Inquisition in the Middle Ages. The government of Israel strongly rejects the false accusations of the general Egyptian prosecution, which relegates to the Israeli authorities horrible deeds and diabolic conspiracies against the security and the international relations of Egypt. From this stand we have protested many times in the past persecution and false accusations of Jews in various countries. We see in the innocent Jews accused by the Egyptian authorities of such severe crimes, victims of vicious hostility to the State of Israel and the Jewish people. If their crime is being Zionist and devoted to Israel, millions of Jews around the world share this crime. We do not think that the rulers of Egypt should be interested in being responsible for shedding Jewish blood. We call upon all those who believe in peace, stability and human relations among nations to prevent fatal injustice.
But as the public trial progressed, it was evident that Israel had indeed been behind the bombing. Eventually, Israeli's Defense Minister Pinhas Lavon was brought down by the scandal, although it appears that he was himself the victim of a frame-up by the real authors of the bombing project, code named "Operation Susannah."
It is therefore a fact that Israel has a prior history of setting off bombs with the intent to blame Arabs for them.
This is not the only example of a "False Flag" operation designed to trick the United States into attacking Israel's enemies. According to Victor Ostrovsky, a Mossad defector now living in Canada, Ronald Reagan was tricked into bombing Libya by means of a radio transmitter smuggled into Tripoli by the Mossad, which broadcast messages designed to fool the United States into thinking Libya was about to launch a massive terror attack on the west. On the basis of this fake evidence, the US bombed Libya, killing Khadaffi's daughter.

More recently, Captain Ward Boston, who served as senior legal counsel for the Navy's Court of Inquiry into the Israeli attack on USS Liberty, has come forward to report that the Court of Inquiry was ORDERED to conclude that the attack was an accident by President Lyndon Johnson. In hindsight, given the use of unmarked aircraft and boats by Israel during the actual attack, it appears that Israel intended to sink the US ship and frame Egypt for the attack, tricking the US into the war against Egypt.
So, with this established history, it is now time to re-examine some facts about the World Trade Towers:
1. There is no proof at all of who was actually on the hijacked airplanes last 9/11. Even the head of the FBI admits that the only hard evidence are the names used by the hijackers on faked IDs. At least 7 of the men whose names were on those IDs have since turned up alive. Another had died back in 1999. None of the names of the alleged hijackers were on the passenger lists of the four aircraft. We do not know who was on those planes, only that we are supposed to think they were Arab Muslims.
2. The night before the attacks on the World Trade Towers, men using those stolen identities visited bars and strip clubs, making sure they would be noticed and remembered by all they met. Students of Islam will confirm that no Muslim devout enough to be willing to commit suicide would spend the night before he was to meet Allah violating so many of Islam's laws regarding alcohol and nude women. This suggests the planting of a false trail ahead of time, doubly so because we know the identities were stolen. Coupled with the deception of the faked Osama "confession" video tape , it is beyond question that deception and fraud exists in the World Trade Towers case.
3. Contrary to early reports (including a statement by George Bush) of large numbers of Israelis being killed in the 9-11 attacks, only two Israelis died, both passengers on the airplanes. No Israelis working in or near the World Trade Towers died. The foreign press has long rumored that Israelis were given an advance warning not to go to work on 9-11, and in the case of Odigo, an Israeli company with offices located near the World Trade Towers, the existence of a warning message sent before the four aircraft had even left the ground is an established fact. That someone in Israel knew of the attacks ahead of time is beyond question.
4. There is an Israeli spy ring. As in the Lavon Affair, Israeli assets have been trying to dismiss the spy ring story (apparently with the FBI's help) while accusing those who refuse to be silent of "anti-Semitism". The lesson from the Lavon case is that Israel's strident denials and smear campaigns are a sure sign that something is indeed being covered up, even as the "art students" continue to be deported. And, as a US Official stated in Carl Cameron's suppressed story on the Israeli Spy/Bugging Ring, evidence does exist that links the arrested Israeli spies with 9-11, but that this evidence has been classified by the United States Government, probably to keep from looking like total idiots at having been so easily fooled for the Nth time.
The United States has been deceived before by Israeli covert operations with the intention of harming American relations with the Arab nations. Israel has never hesitated to kill Americans (USS Liberty) or allow Americans to be killed (The bombing in Beirut that killed 241 American Marines) when it serves a purpose. And, the fact remains that Israel has exploited 9-11 from the instant when Ehud Barak appeared on the BBC moments after the attacks on the World Trade Towers (holding a prepared speech) to the aggression against the Palestinian people which has escalated non-stop ever since 9-11.
Who is responsible for the World Trade Towers attacks? We truly do not know. What we do know beyond all doubt is that someone went to a great deal of effort to provide an easy and at times all-too-obvious a target to blame. Our nation was fooled by that stunt before. The result was that our money and the blood of our children was spent to attack someone else's enemies.
There is an old saying that goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on ME!"

Mr. Rosenberg has been called the Christian Nostradamus but he is Jewish and an Israeli citizen. The Last Jihad was written long before 9/11 occurred, and opens with a hijacked airliner flying a kamikaze mission into an American city which leads into a war with Saddam Hussein over weapons of mass destruction. Then 9/11 happened, and then the war in Iraq happened --his fiction became reality... to a T. It is extremely interesting to note that Rosenberg was educated at the University of Tel Aviv and has previously worked for Israeli head of state Benjamin Netanyahu. Maybe Netanyahu provided Rosenberg with the plot for this book seeing as he also seems to have predicted 9-11 in his book written in 1995 called Terrorism: "How the West Can Win."
An article about the [Army School of Advanced Military Studies] report appears in the Washington Times on September 10, 2001. The report refers to Israel’s armed forces as a “500-pound gorilla in Israel” that is “well armed and trained” and is “known to disregard international law to accomplish mission.” Of the Mossad, the report says: “Wildcard. July 1954: Israel Commits Bombing Attacks in Egypt, Tries to Blame Muslim Brotherhood
Bombs explode in British and American cultural centers and libraries, and in post offices in Alexandria and Cairo. The campaign ends when a bomb explodes prematurely in the pocket of an Israeli agent who is about to plant it in a British-owned cinema. The plan is to damage the relations between Egypt and the US and Britain by placing the blame for the bombings on the Muslim Brotherhood, an Egyptian Islamic militant group. An initial inquiry places blame on the Minister of Defense, Pinhas Lavon, but a subsequent inquiry authorized by Sharett finds that Lavon was set up using forged documents, and that the true author of the false-flag attack was none other than David Ben Gurion, the “father of the Israeli State. Particularly shocking to American readers is Ostrovsky's claim that a right-wing clique within Mossad decided, unbeknownst to then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, to assassinate President George Bush when the president was in Madrid at the end of October 1991 for the opening of Arab-Israeli peace talks. Evidence was to be manufactured implicating the Palestinians.
Three named Palestinian extremists were "taken" from Beirut to Israel's Negev desert and held incommunicado, according to Ostrovsky. Meanwhile Mossad-generated threats on the president's life, seemingly from Palestinians, were leaked. These were designed to throw suspicion on the organization of rogue Palestinian terrorist Abu Nidal. Names and descriptions of the three terrorists were leaked to Spanish police so that, if the plot was successful, blame would automatically fall on them.
Eventually, however, the assassination plot was called off... In a grisly conclusion to the story, however, the three Palestinian prisoners met the fate that had been decreed for them from the time the plot was hatched. In the Negev hideout where they were being held they were "terminated," to employ Ostrovsky's chilling word.

According to a UK government file on the crisis, an unnamed contact within the Euro-Arab Parliamentary Association attempted to convince a British diplomat in Paris, shortly after the hijacking, that the Israeli Secret Services and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), had acted together to seize the plane. According to this version, the Shin Bet helped design the operation to undermine the PLO's standing in France and its rapprochement with the USA.

Another terrorist leader, who approved the murder but was not tried, was future Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir. Indeed, Shamir openly argued that "neither Jewish ethics nor Jewish tradition can disqualify terrorism as a means of combat." Rather, terrorism had "a great part to play … in our war against the occupier [Britain]." If the Palestinians' use of terrorism is morally reprehensible today, so was Israel's reliance upon it in the past, and thus one cannot justify U.S. support for Israel on the grounds that its past conduct was morally superior.

When Israel Attacked the USS Liberty
A particularly damning report compiled by a CIA informant suggests that Israeli Defense minister Moshe Dayan personally ordered the attack and wanted it to proceed until the Liberty was sunk and all on board killed. A heavily redacted version of the report was released in 1977. It reads in part:
"[The source] said that Dayan personally ordered the attack on the ship and that one of his generals adamantly opposed the action and said, 'This is pure murder.' One of the admirals who was present also disapproved of the action, and it was he who ordered it stopped and not Dayan."
This amazing document generated little attention from the press and Dayan was never publicly questioned about his role in the attack.
The analyses by the intelligence agencies are collected in a 1967 investigation by the Defense Subcommittee on Appropriations. Two and half decades later that report remains classified. Why? A former committee staffer said: "So as not to embarrass Israel."
More proof has recently come to light from the Israeli side. A few years after Attack on the Liberty was originally published, Ennes got a call from Evan Toni, an Israeli pilot. Toni told Ennes that he had just read his book and wanted to tell him his story. Toni said that he was the pilot in the first Israeli Mirage fighter to reach the Liberty. He immediately recognized the ship to be a US Navy vessel. He radioed Israeli air command with this information and asked for instructions. Toni said he was ordered to "attack." He refused and flew back to the air base at Ashdod. When he arrived he was summarily arrested for disobeying orders.

On the last attempt, LBJ told Rear-Admiral Lawrence Geis of the Sixth Fleet, “I WILL NOT EMBARRASS OUR ALLY.” The Liberty was then left “dead in the water,” without any assistance for over 16 hours."

Britain first cast its imperial eye on Iran in the 19th century. Its appeal was location; it straddled the land route to India. Once established in Iran, the British quickly began investing — or looting, as some Iranians would say. British companies bought exclusive rights to establish banks, print currency, explore for minerals, run transit lines and even grow tobacco.
In 1913, the British government maneuvered its way to a contract under which all Iranian oil became its property. Six years later it imposed an “agreement” that gave it control of Iran’s army and treasury. These actions set off a wave of anti-British outrage that has barely subsided.
Britain’s occupation of Iran during World War II, when it was a critical source of oil and a transit route for supplies to keep Soviet Russia fighting, was harsh. Famine and disease spread as the British requisitioned food for their troops.
One of the most popular Iranian novels, “Savushun,” is set in this period. It tells of two brothers who take roles every Iranian can recognize: The elder is ambitious and panders to the occupiers; the younger refuses to sell his grain to them and pays a tragic price for his integrity.
During their occupation, the British decided that Reza Shah Pahlavi, whom they had helped place in power, was no longer reliable. They deposed him and chose his son, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, as the new shah.
Once the war ended, Iran resumed its efforts to install democracy, under the leadership of Mohammed Mossadegh. He had campaigned against the Anglo-Persian Agreement of 1919 and had written a book denouncing “capitulation” agreements, under which foreigners were granted immunity from Iranian law.
After he was elected prime minister in 1951, Mr. Mossadegh asked Parliament to take the unimaginable step of nationalizing Iran’s oil industry. It agreed unanimously. That sparked a historic confrontation.
Mr. Mossadegh embodied the anti-British emotion that still roils the Iranian soul. The special envoy President Harry S. Truman sent to Tehran to seek a compromise in the oil dispute, W. Averell Harriman, reported that the British held a “completely 19th-century colonial attitude toward Iran,” but found Mr. Mossadegh just as intransigent. When Mr. Harriman assured Mr. Mossadegh that there were good people in Britain, Mr. Mossadegh gave him a classically Iranian reply.
“You do not know how crafty they are,” he said. “You do not know how evil they are. You do not know how they sully everything they touch.”
Desperate to regain control of Iran’s oil, the British sought to crush Mr. Mossadegh with measures that included harsh economic sanctions — sanctions comparable to the ones they are now imposing. When that failed, they asked President Dwight D. Eisenhower to join in a plot to overthrow him. He agreed, not because he wished to help the British recover their oil but because he had been persuaded that otherwise, Iran might fall to Communism. Iran, after all, was on the southern flank of the Soviet Union, standing between it and the oil fields and warm-water ports of the Persian Gulf.
The coup, staged in August 1953, ended Iranian democracy and allowed Mohammed Reza Pahlavi to build a dictatorship that remained a staunch cold war ally of both Britain and the United States. But the alliance backfired on both countries when his repression set off the 1979 revolution that brought the mullahs to power. Today, many Iranians who loathe the mullahs nevertheless look for Britain’s hand behind any dark plot; some even accuse it of organizing the 1979 revolution, and imposing Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
More than half a century ago, Secretary of State Dean Acheson wrote that Mr. Mossadegh was “inspired by a fanatical hate of the British and a desire to expel them and their works from the country regardless of the cost.” Many Iranians still feel that way, as their country falls into ever deeper isolation. In Iran, the words “anger” and “Britain” fit easily together.
Outside interference is a central fact of modern Iranian history. And for most of the 20th century, Britain was at the center of most of it.
Nonetheless, a spark of admiration has long been buried within Iranians’ anger, as it was in many other places across the British Empire.
