A sea — or rather, pond — of green greets visitors to Discovery Park in Muscatine. The vivid display of green surrounded by green can be seen at the pond behind the Environmental Learning Center in the park Director Curt Weiss said the pond is covered mostly in duck weed, but also a little watermeal. He said both are a natural plant that floats on top of the pond with a root system laying below. Both are common this time of year in ponds because of a combination of nutrients from surrounding trees and the heat. He joked that it’s perfectly fine for the water — but it might not make fishers happy. Photo: Joe Jarosz/Muscatine Journal
