Michelle: To Each According to Their Needs

by Keith Koffler on August 24, 2012, 11:11 am

The Obama campaign repeatedly asserts something which is indisputably true: This is election is about the future of the country, a struggle for its soul.

It is a contest between conservative ideals of individual freedom and the Socialist-inspired precepts held by those at the furthest leftward end of the Democratic Party.

Let’s take a look at a campaign speech Michelle Obama gave Thursday night, much of it her usual boilerplate.

Try to imagine the thinking that informs the statements she makes. She says she wants a nation where everyone has “a fair shot.” But what she really wants is a society where everyone is guaranteed to hit the bullseye.

She says, for example:

One of the things that I try to remind people, because I always try to remind myself, is that we’re here, we’re doing this work because of our values — because of the values we believe in . . . All of our kids should be able to go to college without a mountain of debt — not just some, all of them.

Really? Everyone needs to go to college? And who pays for this, Hu Jintao?

President Hu is already providing a basic education for all Americans. Now he has to send them all to college as well?

To do what? Less than a third of all jobs require a college degree. No more than half those who start college finish it. Only about 60 percent of college graduates hold a job that they needed their college education to get.

What is a mountain of debt? Average tuition at a public university for those living off campus is just over $8,000 a year. With some modest saving over time by parents and a long term loan at today’s rates, is it really such an onerous thing for a kid to go to college without other people helping pay for it with their taxes?

On health reform:

Today, because of that reform — today — our kids can stay on our insurance until they’re 26 years old.  (Applause.)  And we know how important this is, so that the young people in our lives, when they graduate and they’re just starting out and they’re getting out there in the world, they don’t have to figure all that out without health care.  We know what that means.

Someone has to pay for these tender young things WELL INTO THEIR TWENTIES to figure things out. Why do taxpayers – or Hu Jintao – have to pay for their health insurance while they go to graduate school or work at a candy store trying to discover the meaning of life before they get real job?

Today, because of this reform, insurance companies have to cover basic preventative care at no [extra] cost — things like contraception, cancer screenings, prenatal care.

What is the principle, other than pure Socialism, that underlies the notion that preventative care should be free? And remember, not free, but paid for by others who have to pay higher premiums to insurers or have their care rationed.

AND WHAT IS THE PRINCIPLE THAT SAYS I HAVE TO PAY FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO HAVE SEX???

Here is the principle:

And what (President Obama) understands and believes is that when you’ve worked hard and you’ve done well — and there is nothing wrong with doing well — and when you’ve walked through that doorway of opportunity, he knows that you don’t slam it shut behind you.  You don’t do that.  You reach back and you give other folks the same opportunities you had to get ahead.

Well, not exactly “you” reach back. The government takes your money and reaches back. Remember, the Obamas only contributed about 1 percent of their $200,000 + income to charity before Barack’s political career took off. The Bidens last year gave 1.5 percent.

What these people are talking about is not our personal responsibility to others. They are talking about wealth redistribution. Michelle, concludes:

We cannot turn back now — not now.  In this country, we need to keep moving forward.  Forward!  Forward!  (Applause.)  In America, we always move forward.  Forward!  (Applause.)
