Obama casually pops Nicorette during White House ceremony [VIDEO]

  • President Obama casually inserted a piece of Nicorette gum into the First Mouth Monday afternoon.

Obama has a well-documented history of using gum control to stave off his smoking urges, but it’s rare to catch the president getting his nicotine fix in public.

Ever-conscious of the many cameras that capture his every move, Obama waited for just the right moment — during an event honoring former President George H.W. Bush — when it seemed likely that no network in the world would be focusing on the current president.

Fortunately, the eagle-eyed producers at the Fox News Channel transitioned to a presidential split-screen at that very moment.

In a mere instant, the president exhibited the requisite slight-of-hand of a world class Nicorette consumer.

The president apparently never looked down down while his hand shed the single unit of gum from its tinfoil and plastic casing and approached his mouth as if to touch his face in thoughtful contemplation.

The square piece of sweet release with its comfortably rounded corners earned a mere split second of Fox News’s valuable screen time, peeking out from Obama’s three-fingered clutch before being pushed off to its pliable end.

But the magic didn’t stop there.

Obama’s middle finger ran the length of his lower lip as he wiped away at some fictional annoyance, exuding the confidence of a man satisfied that he had evaded notice.

With the gum now firmly planted between the First Molars, Obama demonstrated all the slow-paced gum chewing prowess of a wannabe class clown.

Just as WikiHow suggests to would-be middle school gum chewers, “Chew slowly, and discreetly, and make sure your mouth is shut. Don’t make unnecessary chewing noises and make sure your jaw movement is at a slow, steady pace.”

Obama has clearly perfected the technique, matching the clenching of his jaw with the rhythm of the speaker, feigning a sense of presidential concern.

No effort was made to reach out to the White House for comment.

Such a talent those Fox guys have.   A guy puts a piece of gum in his mouth (we really don't know if it was for nicotine addiction), calmly chews it and they can create a short story reading like something Hemingway might write.   Maybe like "The Old Man and the Sea".

It's hyped into a "nicotine fit" even.

PHEW!

Obama Is Generous With His Nicorette Gum

Speaking last night about his dozen-or-so times interviewing Barack Obama, 60 Minutes reporter Steve Kroft said he and the president have a special bond. "We have this thing where, we're both, uh, former smokers trying very hard," Kroft explained, as reported by Capital New York. "Um, every time I see him now he gives me a couple of pieces of Nicorette gum, which is fine. If he's out, then I will give some to him. That's sort of the running joke." Asked to betray his addiction buddy, Kroft wouldn't say directly whether the president still sneaks a smoke, but deferred to Reggie Love, who once told Kroft, "Boy you should have been around here yesterday. It was awfully smokey." Still not cool, Steve. Don't be surprised if that next interview request comes back denied.

  1. About Addictive Personalities

    • Why is it some people can try addictive substances and resist returning to  them, while others are hooked from their first encounter? It is only logical to  suppose these people differ in some way, and scientists have found this to be  the case. The answer is addictive personalities, which cause some people to be  more susceptible to developing an addiction.

    Minimizing and Denial

    • One characteristic that has been identified in those believed to have  addictive personalities is a tendency to minimize negative aspects of their  addictions. People with this trait may say, "It's no big deal,"  or "I only do it on special occasions," or even "I can quit at any time."  Statements such as this are an addict's attempt to downplay her addiction to  appease those around her, as well as her own conscience. This behavior often  leads to outright denial of a problem once those around her begin to question  the minimizing.

    Low Self-Esteem

    • Another common trait of those exhibiting an addictive personality is low  self-esteem. Such a person will remark that he engages in his addiction because  of how it makes him feel. He may feel as though he cannot participate in social  situations without using his addiction as a crutch, because he does not feel  worthy without it. Low self-esteem can also lead to a defeatist mentality, which  only serves to continue the cycle of addiction.

    Normalizing and Emotional Avoidance

    • Those with addictive personalities also have a tendency to normalize. In  order to keep from feeling out of place, an addict will normalize herself and  her setting by surrounding herself with others who engage in the same behavior  or share  the same addiction. This also leads to an overall acceptance of deviant  behavior, another common trait found in addictive personalities. Once someone  with an addictive personality begins to remove herself from positive situations  and surround herself with negative ones, she is better able to avoid any  emotional reactions to her behavior and the effect it has on others, essentially  enabling her to put on emotional  blinders.
