With all the 20-40 homeless people wandering around downtown Pawtucket daily, one city church group is looking into the possibility of establishing a soup kitchen/mission in one of the empty buildings on Main Street. The program would also involve drug and alcohol and psychological rehab and job searches for those who are physically capable. Ideally, the church would love to have living space for the homeless. We know that St. Paul's Episcopal Church has enough space for 17. However, with all the home mortgage foreclosures in the city, we feel a need for another downtown homeless shelter. Maybe the city artists could provide jobs for those who have lost their homes. Prosperity should spread to those less fortunate. I wonder what neighbors would think? Probably NIMBY.
