Dear Arthur,
Has anyone visited the Hope Artiste Village farmers market on 1005 Main Street? On Saturday, January 17, at about 11:30 a.m., it was a supermarket sight not seen on Main Street since the early 1970's. About 300 people were filling their makeshift shopping bags with produce and seafood.
Incidentally, parking spaces were filled several streets from the former Hope Webbing in both directions. RIPTA buses, stopping in front of the farmers market, were filled with passengers from Providence.
What is still marvelous about the market, open Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is the reminder of how the market resembles the workings of the old individual markets of the Lower East Side of New York City in the early 1900's.
It is a worthwhile way to spend an early Saturday afternoon. The market will be there until early May 2009.
Happy food shopping.
Peace,
Jim
