Dear Arthur and friends,

What government or private interventions can be obtained for children at age five who wish to not attend school?  I have heard of two cases where local preschoolers have to cajoled and nearly forced to attend kindergarten.  In point:  This situation does not bode well for future NECAP test scores and other "No Child Left Behind" remedies to improve schools in the future.  

Can beneficial programs such as "Head Start" be expanded?

This is a choice for parents right or wrong...and they have to be shown the values for them and their kids for attending. They will choose when they see the plusses, but many parents have seen no value for their kids.

The schools need to do a better selling job and a better educaion of their staff to send a positive message.

We can not always force people to do something...even if we know it is better for them in the long run.

There are also some early intervention programs which hopefully capture and remediate the kids early enough who need that extra help.

Head start and other positives cost money and yet there are many who miss out becuase of budgets and poor outreach.

You can lead them to water but can;t make them drink if they do not want water and the schools were not there tonite, becuase they do not care if the kids learn or want more...Here is the menu- take it or leave it is their attitude.

Oh yes, pay me more for the dropouts too.
