and note the Malden vote was almost a repeal

Malden - Malden voters were finally asked their opinion on the pay-as-you-throw trash ordinance at the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3, however turnout wasn’t quite enough to repeal the program. Only 30 percent of voters, or 8,508 of the 28,471 registered, hit the polls.

According to the city charter, in order to repeal the ordinance on trash, one third of the city’s registered voters needed to vote in favor of the ballot.

Of those who cast a vote Tuesday, the majority were against the program. There were 5,762 “yes” votes and 2,160 “no,” and 586 voters left the question blank. City Clerk Karen Anderson said the ballot question needed a total of 9,491 “yes” votes to repeal the program.
